"Luthermuir which at the time of the last report, seems to have been unworthy of notice being at that time only a barren moor is now mostly cultivated and contains a population - of above 1000. On account, however of the decline of manufactures, especially the weaving trade, it is beginning to decrease in population, but to advance in several other respects. A few years ago, this place seems to have been the resort of the destitute and abandoned from almost every parish in the country. It is pleasing to remark, that it is improving fast in point of morality and religion." (New Stat Act [Statistical Account])
This name applies to a number of Cottages etc Scattered over a Considerable area, they are mostly built of Clay mixed with Straw, Small Stones, and a few bricks for foundation, the occupiers are principally hand loom weavers of Cotton fabrics. This place has a very desolate appearance. |

"Since the date of the former account, Several Stone Coffins have been discovered on the farm of Cobbleheugh, in which were found the remains of Skeletons of a very large Size." (New Stat Act [Statistical Account])
The Skeletons and Coffins mentioned above, were found about 30 years ago, and Mr James Scott of Cobleheugh who pointed out the place states that several Coffins and Bones have been found here since that time, and two years ago when he Sub-Soiled the field there were turned up by the plough five Human Sculls in a good state of preservation, and near them Several Stone Coffins containing unctuous matter, pulverized bones, and charcoal. When Surveying the Site today I found Several pieces of charcoal at the places, also pieces of the Stone which formed the Coffins. The place where those relics were found is on the farm of Cobleheugh, on the Side of the Balmakelly Burn about half a mile North, west from the village of Marykirk. The ground is Slightly elevated, but the elevation appears to be natural.

The parochial Church which is ill situated in the middle of the village, has long been in a state of decay, and bears the marks of great antiquity. It is 96 feet long, and 17 broad, Its walls are much Sunk in the earth and the floor and area are in different places at least 4 feet below the burial ground on the outside of the wall. - There is an Aile on the South wall opposite to the pulpit, where the Strachans, Forbesses, and Foulertons, who were proprietors of Thornton have been buried. In this Aile built anno 1615 there is a stately monument to the memory of D. [Dame] Elizabeth Forbes, lady of Thornton, and of Sir James Strachan Bart [Baronet] her husband. Its pillars, images, and other devices were finely cut, elegantly ornamented, and highly finished. Near the centre of this monument is a Latin inscription, but this is so defaced by age, and by a burning, occasioned by the Covenanters, about the time of the Revolution, that it is not now legible. On the Ceiling of this aile, which is of oak, there is a numerous list of honourable and ancient families, (with their Coats of arms beautifully painted,) who were connected with the family of Sir J. Strachan of Thornton. In the east corner of this Aile there is a Font; and on the north east

At the entry by the stocks almost consumed by age, and on the outside of the church strongly fixed to the wall are the Joggs. Near the gate of the churchyard stands a stone, and tradition says this was the cross where the weekly market stood. about 6 years ago the church received a new roof, By taking down the old one which was of oak there was destroyed a ceiling of the same wood, on which was beautifully carved a cross, a crown, St Peter's Keys, the armorials of bishop Elphinstone, and Dunbar, and several other Bishops" (Old Stat Act [Statistical Account] Vol [Volume] 18 Pages 611-12)
"The Thornton Aisle which bears the date of 1615 is still standing. The inscription of the beautiful monument which it contained, as well as the monument itself, are now nearly defaced. The whole interior of the aisle has suffered much from the depredations of the youngsters in the village and the roof which seems at one time to have been finely painted has been destroyed by the same mischievous hands." "There is a small piece of ground a little up the burn from Marykirk called the Threap Acre about the Boundary of this ground it is said there was once a dispute between the proprietors Balmaleedie and Aberluthnet. The former claimed the ground as his and Said the Burn was the boundary the latter contended otherwise. At last they agreed to Settle the dispute by allowing the proprietor of Aberluthnet to bring proper men upon the spot who might declare upon oath the truth of the matter. The arbitrators came at the time appointed with the earth of Aberluthnet in their boots, and Solemnly swore, they were then Standing upon the ground of Aberluthnet. This fraud coming to the ears of the proprietor of Balmaleedie, he sent his neighbour a challenge to meet him in the field and answer for his perfidy by single combat. The combatants met, and the proprietor of Aberluthnet was slain, and it is not above 18 years Since the Stones were removed from the place where it is Said he was buried."

Not far from the church, is a farm Called Spear-Mill, which is said to have derived its name from a battle having been fought there with Spears. The story related of the battle is this. The North Esk by a great flood had Swept away the Mill of Canterland at Kinnardie. The proprietor of Canterland and Balmaleedie, not knowing where to build another, requested of the proprietor of Aberluthnet, that he would allow him to carry the Mill-dam taken from the North Esk, and the Burn of Aberluthnet, after turning his mill a little farther towards the East, until both in one current reached his property. This the proprietor of Aberluthnet absolutely refused, and the other strenously insisted that it should be done by force, if he would not consent to it. In a night or two after the proprietor of Canterland caused a Strong oxen plough, draw a line from the Burn and Milldam, in the direction he wished the water to run, and after this set his people to work to complete what he had already begun. The proprietor of Aberluthnet being informed of this speedily assembled his vassals, and dependents and attacked with great violence his opponent, who was well prepared to receive him, near the place where the mill now stands. Both sides joined battle, they fought with Spears, and after a bloody conflict, the proprietor of Aberluthnet was defeated, the Mill dam extended, and the Mill itself built where it presently is. After the battle it is Said they buried their dead on the farm of Spear Mill. But when this happened, none can precisely tell. On different parts of this farm several stone coffins, and the bones of dead bodies have been found, and it is supposed, the stones in the Church wall might have been taken from there and that the Stone most ornamented, might belong to Some leader or Commander that fell in battle." It is stated that human bones have been found at this place at different times, and Mr J, Croll of Spearmill states that a human Scull was found a few years ago. - The Site is a rising ground, or a series of Natural Hillocks near the Boundary between the Parishes of Marykirk and St Cyrus, and it is supposed to be the place where the Battle took place, and the finding of Bones here and the appearance of the ground tend very much to confirm the supposition. |

"There is also at Balmano a fine Spring well Called St John's Well, which in antient times was held in great estimation. Numbers who thought its water of a Sanative quality, brought their rickety children to be washed in its stream. Its water was likewise thought a sovereign remedy for sore eys which by frequent washing was supposed to cure them." (Old Stat Act [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 18 Page 631.)
"Close to the mansion house of Balmanno is a very fine spring known formerly it would seem by the name of 'St John's Well', the water of which in a more Superstitious age, was held to be of peculiar potency in curing diseases." (New Stat Act [Statistical Account] Page 299) |

"At Balmaleedie, not far from the
village there is a Spring of the Chaly-
beate kind, and nearer to Marykirk
on the Edge of the Burn. there is another,
both much impregnated with mineral
Substance and which have been
not a little characterised and re
commended by physicians of great eminence. The former, which is supposed lightest,
has been for some years quite neglected, and the latter, for scorbutic disorders, and
chronical distempers has been much resorted to by the inhabitants of the village,
and it is believed, not a few have received great benefit." (Old Stat Act [Statistical Account])
[Alongside the above entry:]
With the exception of the Chalybeate Spring
Supplied on Trace near village of Marykirk,
the others are all drained and destroyed.-

"It is also to be observed there were 4 Druidical temples here, one at Hospital Shiells, another on the farm of Balmakellie, a third on the farm of Dykelands, and at no great distance from the Deer Dyke, that in ancient times Separated this parish from Garvock when (as tradition says) it was a forest, and a fourth near the house of Hatton, at a little distance from the public road, but as the stones of all these are removed, and taken away for building houses, there appears very few vestiges of them now." (Old Stat Act [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 18. P. [Page] 633)
"The object shewn on the Trace is supposed to be the remains of the Temple referred to in Old Stat Act [Statistical Account] it is situated near the House of Hatton, and is called by the Old * * people in the neighbourhood the Catholic Chapel, it is the only object in the neighbourhood having any appearance of Druidical remains, it is nearly Circular and has evidently been Composed of a mass of loose stones.

"The ancient name of this parish was Aberluthnott or as it is more commonly expressed in ancient writings Aberluthnet. This name appears to have been in use at the beginning of last Century, from the fact of a pair of Silver Communion Cups having been presented in the Year 1715, for the use of the Parish, bearing the following inscription. "This cup was given to the Kirk of Aberluthnott by David Melvill and Jean Rait of Pitgarvie, 1715." - The ancient name is now in disuse having entirely given place to that of Marykirk. Marykirk Parish is Situated at the Southern extremity of the
