"As noted in the former Statistical Account, the original orthography of this parish seemed to have been Mariae Cultura".
"Cul tira", in Gaelic means the "back of the land". It is of an oblong form, 6 English Miles in length and 2 in breadth, extending from the river Dee to the Grampian Mountains."
This Parish is bounded on the north by the river Dee, on the East by Banchory Devenick Parish, on the South by Fetteresso Parish and on the West by Durris parish.
"The soil on the river side is naturally thin and sandy, on the rising midland, it becomes deeper and blacker, with a bottom of Clay in some parts, and more Southward, the ground turns swampy, turfy, and mossy. The extremities of the parish are in some places rocky hills and mosses, in others, green hills with large stones, rushy moors and heath. Indeed the whole district is rocky and stony, except some small haughs and dales on the river side. Much of the parish is thin ground, and recumbent, as are many parts of the north of Scotland, or what is locally termed a pan or moorband." (New Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] P. [Page] 189-90)
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this parish.

The Barony of Maryculter being a fifth part of the whole Estate, was a wild waste and almost uninhabited, about AD. 1167 King William the Lion, granted it to the Knights Templars, who: by their assiduous and persevering industry brought a great portion of it under cultivation so that it soon became a fertile and valuable possession; about this time their residence or Preceptory as it was then called was erected, but which has Subsequently been enlarged at different periods and now Constitutes the present building Called Maryculter House. The adjacent Church was erected about the same period. In the 13th. Century by an appeal to Rome it became a parish, apart from Peterculter to which it formerly belonged, and about the beginning of the 14th Century it passed into the hands of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem commonly called the Knights of Malta, and about 1535 the estate of Blairs was disposed of to Gilbert Menzie and in 1548 the whole Barony was disposed of. Auchlunies became the property of Provost Collison, and Maryculter passed to a family named Lindsay, and the remainder to the Menzies of Pitfoddels, in 1726 Maryculter also became the property of the Menzies but in 1811 it was disposed of to W. C. Gordon of Fyvie who still holds possession of Maryculter. In 1827 Menzies of Pitfodels gifted the estate of Blairs to the Roman Catholic Bishops & Clergy of Scotland. The present building is a beautiful Mansion pleasantly Situated on the East banks of the River Dee, although partly Secluded by the quantity of wood which almost surrounds it of which there are some fine specimens of beautiful full grown trees, The house, garden and ornamental ground are kept in very good repair and it is let upon lease to Thomas Todd Esqr. who resides there. |

This Church is coeval with Maryculter House being erected soon after 1167 AD. as a Chapel of the Knights Templars with graveyard &c. attached, and Continued as a R.C. [Roman Catholic] Chapel until 1560 when it became the Parish Church of the Established religion and (continued) as such up to 1777 when the present Parish Church, Manse, &c. were erected. This Church then fell into disuse and decay so that at present the walls only remains to a few feet in height, the graveyard is yet sometimes used for interments and Contains several fine monuments and other relics & the Sculptured Effigies of a Knight and Lady Supposed to be of the family of Menzies of Pitfodels, and which is situated within the S.E. [South East] walls of the old Church.

[continued from page 19]
of Maryculter was in their possession, they erected on the Estate of Blairs a Chapel for the convenience of their tenants residing on the east side of the Barony. The Chapel stood on the Side of the hill about half a mile South of the present college. The remains of this Chapel were taken down in 1858, by the present procurator of the College (Revd. [Reverend] A. Fleming.) During the time of the Templars one of their Chaplains was stationed at Blairs, and one of the parks (of the present Home farm) called the Manse Park, was the land belonging to the said Chaplain, who was called the Parson of Blairs. The presentation to the Parsonage of Blairs is mentioned in the Title Deeds of the Estate 1535, as belonging to the proprietors of the Estate, i.e. the proprietors of the Estate are the Sole Patrons. In 1535 the Estate of Blairs together with the above named Chapel and Parsonage was conveyed to Menzies of Pitfoddels by the Knights Hospitallers, the Estate remained in possession of the family of Menzies from 1535 till the 19th. of April 1827, when John Menzies Esqr the last of the family of that name, conveyed the present Estate of Blairs to the Roman Catholic Bishops of Scotland, for the establishment of a College. (The above information was supplied by the Revd. [Reverend] Andrew Fleming Procurator Blairs College).

A beautiful stone building erected in 1829. The Estate of Blairs was bestowed as a free and voluntary gift to the R.C. [Roman Catholic] Bishops & Clergy of Scotland, by the late and only member of the family of Menzies of Pitfoddles in 1827, in whose possession it remained since 1535. The College, with R.C. [Roman Catholic] Chapel, farm steading &c. were erected from the proceeds of the Estate, and Subscriptions from various parts. The College is principally intended for the education of students intended for the Priesthood, but in some cases the education is general, and although many privileges are allowed to Roman Catholic Students, and in Some cases they get their education free, yet, others are admitted to a general education; there are at present about 50 Students residing at this College, which is conducted by a President, a Procurator, and three Professors, who must always be Priests. |
