014 | [Situation] A little west of Herdmanston in the lawn. This name applies to a Small Square building having an arched roof. It was founded in the 13 century by John de Saint Sinclair for the use of a burying vault of the Sinclair family. "In the park at Herdmanston, and close to the present mansion house, are the remains of part of a chapel erected in the 13 century by John se Saint Claire. All now that exists of this ancient building is a portion, apparently of its western extremity, measuring within the walls, 30 feet in length by 14 in breadth. A part of the eastern end appears to have been recently removed, and the gable rebuilt with the fresh stones. It is now used as the burying vault of the Sinclair family. Within are two flat tomb stones covering the remains of William de Saint Clair, and Sibille, his wife, bearing date 1598." See Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] 1841. |
