It is said that a refractory Monk or Friar from the Monastery of Melrose was exiled to this place by the Superior, for disobedience etc and on his arrival the inhabitants of the adjoining Neighbourhood collected together and built a dyke around the the portion of land allotted to him from which circumstance It still retains the name Friardykes. No portion of the dyke now Remains
