[Situation] Towards the S.En. [South Eastern] extremity of the County of Dumfries.
The name of this Parish is derived from that of the River Annan which runs in a Southern direction through the Wn. [Western] district. The derivation is doubtful, but is supposed to be Amhann the slow running water.
The Parish of Annan is bounded on the North by Hoddom and Middlebie on the East by Kilpartrick-Fleming and Dornock, on the South by the Solway Firth and on the West by Cummertrees and Hoddom. There is no detached part of it within the boundaries of another Parish nor is there within the limits above assigned to it a detached portion of any other Parish. Irregular in shape, it varies from 2½ miles to 4 miles in breadth and is 8 miles in length - and its entire area has now been computed [--] acres of which about ⁹/₁₀ths are arable and permanent pasture, the remainder being moor waste and plantation. The shores are flat and sandy - as also the whole district which has a gradual incline towards the South. - Three parallel ridges of moderate height run through the Parish in a N.E. [North East] and S.W. [South West] direction - at the termination of the latter of which is Woodcock Air the greatest elevation measuring [Continued on page 169]
