He adds, that Moddan had his camp on the promontory of Thurso, ''promontorio Thorsnesia'', ( ie. Holburnhead,) where parts of a wall fortifying the camp alongst a hollow extending to the whole breadth of the head or promontory, are still to be seen. Barry writes, page 154, that ''Harold's mother, Hegla, was a daughter of Moddan, a man of great wealth and influence in Caithness, whose son was Count Ottar of Thurso''. And page 168, he says, that Erlend, to whom the grant of half of Caithness, with the title and dignity of an earl, had been captured by Malcolm King of Scotland, lived for the most part at Thurso. |

SCRABSTER CASTLE (Remains of) |
Remains of Scrabster Castle |
MacKay's History of the Clan MacKay.
Torfeu's History of Caithness
Mr J. Cairncross Thurso |
005 |
The Castle of Scrabster was once the residence of the Bishops of Caithness, and would appear to have been in existence during the 11th Century - as mention is made in the ''History of the Clan MacKay'' of Bishop Bar of Caithness having resided in the Castle of Scrabster in 1079, probably the castle existed long before that date. There is but little now remaining of this once famious Structure - A piece of a tower at the east end - having a dungeon below it, which is supposed to have extended beneath the court-yard, - and a few pieces of the wall are quite visible, but the shape of the edifice cannot be acurately traced. There was a draw-bridge on the land Side of the Castle, but all traces of it has long Since vanished. The remains of this Castle Stands on the summit of an insular rock of grey lime-stone and is situated about midway between Thurso and Scrabster. This ruin is generally called Scrabster Castle (as written on trace) by the inhabitants of Thurso.
The Bishops of Caithness then resided by turns at their Castles of Scrabster and Halkirk, and sometimes at Dornoch. Adam was succeeded by Gilbert, formerly Archdeacon of Murray, who died at Scrabster at an advanced age, in 1245. Part of the ruins of the Castle of Scrabster

is still to be seen, which, from its Situation and the extent of ground it occupied, appears to have been a strong and capacious Structure, although Somewhat rude as to its architecture. It stands on a rock close to the Sea, half a mile west of Thurso, and had a draw-bridge on the land Side. A terrace was formed in the Sea bank, to nearly half a mile from the castle - westward, - part of which still remains, and is called the ''Bishop's Walk''. Bishop Andrew of Caithness, the first of whom there is any account - in Spottiswood's Catalogue of Bishops, was immediate predecessor to John; he was in great favour with King William, and one of the five Scottish bishops who accompanied him the King to the convention at Norham, in defence of the liberties of the Kingdom, - both civil and ecclesiastic, - resisted the arrogant and designing claim of the Archbishop of York, supported by the Pope's legate, to be acknowledged metropolitan of Scotland. The Scottish Bishops received considerable assistance from Gilbert - above mentioned, then Archdeacon. Sir Robert mentions a Bishop Bar of Caithness, who lived in 1079, and built a church at Dornoch, and that he was Succeeded by Bishop William, who flourished in 1097.'' - ''MacKay's History of the Clan MacKay.'' page 29 & 30. |

at Kirkwall. (It is supposed to have existed before the 13th Century." Page 31. "The foundation of the Castle of Thurso, was dug up a few years ago, and its well, about 20 feel deep, and strongly built, - circular from the bottom, - was cleared out. The remains of the ruins were deeply covered with sod, amongst which, a considerable number of hewn Stones were found, the rest having been carried away Several ages ago."
The well has been filled in many Years ago, therefore - there is nothing of it to be seen but it is said to have been Some where about the middle of the Castle. The name "green" is Supposed to have been derived from the appearance of the ruin, which is said to have looked Something like the Tullochs, or remains of the Pictish houses which are so numerous throughout the County. Ormly is Said to have been the old and proper name of the Castle, and, that Lord Ormly, who is also the Earl of Bridalbane, took his title from this place. |

[Continued from page 149]
including a considerable body from Ireland, defeated Harold Earl of Orkney and Caithness, Subdued all Caithness, and Severely punished the inhabitants for the cruelty exercised upon Bishop John. This battle is said to have been fought at the hill of Claredon, near Thurso. Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster several years ago, built on this hill an octogon tower, which in memory of that event, has been termed "Harold's Tower". Some affirm that this Harold, upon his Submission, was pardoned by the King for all the outrages he had committed, and reinstated in his possession of Caithness, as formerly enjoyed, but under very severe conditions; in Security for his performance of which, he gave his Son Torphin to the King as an hostage; and as these were not performed, the eyes of the young man were put out. This, however, is not so probable but Seems rather to apply to Harold's Successor, Earl John, by whose order or connivance the people burnt Bishop Adam in his Castle at Brawl, Halkirk, Six miles from Thurso, and who had afterwards been pardoned by King Alexander II. --

An Embankment has been built which cuts of - as it were - a semi-circular portion of the cliff - Entirely inaccessable from the sea -
A considerable quantity of Earth has been dug out on the East side of it - to the depth of 8 or 10 feet - by the tenant of the farm. (see A in trace) About two feet from the surface may be seen the remains of shells - Periwinkles, Limpets etc - in small heaps - which clearly points to the great antiquity of the Broch - two feet of black soil takes a great number of years to accumulate - even in a well sheltered place - consequently it wd [would] take much longer to accumulate on the sea coast - No information whatever can be obtained of it Except that it is an old fort. |
