039 | A strong building of the ancient Castellated form. Situated a little S. [South] West of Balnabruich, on a rocKy promontory, at one time detached from the mainland and connected by a Draw Bridge. Inaccessible on all sides but one, by natural precipitous rocKy walls. Said to have been erected at a very early period, but has been renewed several times since then. It was taKen by "Montrose" in 1662 on his landing from OrKney, on his march south ward. Sir John Sinclair, then Proprietor fled at his approach, leaving his lady and followers for defence, who surrendered after a short resistence. This occupation was of short duration, as the DuKe of Montrose was taKen prisoner, same year and executed. Property of William Thomson Sinclair Esq: of FreswicK. |
