Sir
The name Poteath
is given by several parties
to the Cottage occupied by
George Rae the Earl of Eglinton's
Baron Officer and of late years
to the farmhouse & yard occupied
by Hugh Hunter, there is little
doubt that the house occupied
by the Baron Officer is the original
Porteath, whereas that occupied by
Hugh Hunter was formerly called
Porteath Miln & Harthcraig Mill both of which are now disused.
The latter named person
is an extensive farmer in the

some of his leisure hours to the Subject of Antiquities are of
opinion that this mound and others of a similar
nature in this parish were erected for the purposes of dispensing
justice others are of the opinion that they have been used
as fortification, be that as it may from all enquiries made
the subject still seems unsatisfactory J.M.
"Along the steep banks

supposed to be the remains of a
very primitive class of fortlets.
they stand at an unequal distances
apparently as suitableness of situation afforded, some scarcely half a mile, others a mile and a half apart.
They are constructed in the same manner, and are of very limited dimensions. The enclosure or on the summit, of about 30 or 40 feet in diameter, is surrounded by a rampart from 6 to 8 feet in thickness, faced on both sides with large undressed stones neatly laid.

"The original Mansion house of Hunterston, part of which consists of a square tower, evidently
of ancient construction, though of very limited dimensions, is still kept inhabitable, being occupied as a farm
house; a handsome new mansion having been erected by the proprietor about 30 years ago, a little way nearer
the sea. The old fortlet occupied originally a narrow tongue of land jutting into a deep morass, which of course
constituted its security from external aggressors. But whilst modern improvements have turned the bogs into
fruitful fields, the little 'lonely tower.' has been kept of its characteristic defense. Many little patches have from
time to time been added to this older dwelling, and which, being closely envisioned by aged trees has altogether
a very antique appearance."New Stat Acct. [New Statistical Account] page 256 |

Mr Archibald Barbour the Farmer of Bushglen states that some years ago his father commenced to cart away the soil from the Mounts but when the proprietor John Crawfurd Esqr heard of the affair he would not allow it to be defaced which goes to prove its identity as something connected with the antiquities of the parish.
Archibald Barbour further States that the only thing found in his remembrance was a cut Stone of nice workmanship, the appearance of the herbage at all times is different from anything adjoining. |

This name is written differently on the Estate Maps thus Corsbie[underlined] Crosby[underlined] and Crosbie the proprietor has adopted Crosbie in all his legal documents and general use
"Crosby. This property belongs to John Crawfurd of Auchnames, whose ancestor aquired it from his connections, the original family, of the same name and designation, about the beginning of last century. There is a small mansion house on it, erected near the end of the 17th Century, which was long ruinous, but is now being restored in good taste by the proprietor. Crosby was an ancient inheritance of the Crawfurds of Lowdon, Sheriffs of Ayr, and there seems great probability that it was [at] the original "Tower of Crosby" that the hero of Scotland, Wallace, found refuge with his uncle, Sir Ronald Crawfurd during his outlawry by the English Authorities. This incident, it is true, has often been assigned to Crosby in Kyle, but there seems great reason to think erroniously. Crosby in Cunningham [is] uniformly contradistinguished from the other as "Crosby Crawfurd" in all early writings; and the intelligent Chalmers, speaking of Crosby in Kyle, distictlystates it to have "belonged to the family of Fullarton in the 12th Century"
Pont thus alludes to the Tower of Crosby:- Crosby toure is the habitation of William Crawfurd of Auchnaims, by divers thought to be chieffis of the Crawfurds." New Stat Acct [Statistical Account]

"The promontory being, with the exception of the Rhinns of Galloway, the extreme western point of the Lowlands of Scotland, and lying conveniently between Edinburgh and IcolmKill, and also between Dundonald and Rothsay, the Castle was probably a halting place of the Kings of Scotland on embarking either for Bute or for the burying place of their early ancestors. Some charters of the first and second Stewarts purport to have received the sign-manual at "Arnele", and may popibly[?] evince this castle - however small and incommodious - to have worn in a limited degree similar houses to those of the homogeneous castle of Dundonald." etc Full[Fullerton's] Gazetteer |

"Some traces of remote times still exist here. Along the steep banks facing the sea beach are placed a chain of little eminences called "Castle Hills" supposed to be the remains of a very primitive class of fortlets. In particular, they occur at Boydston, Glenfoot, Seamill, and Ardneil. They are all constructed in the same manner, and are of very limited dimensions. A portion of the bank is detached on all sides and rounded conically; the enclosure on the summit, of about 30 or 40 feet in diameter, is surrounded by a rampart from 6 to 8 feet in thickness, faced on both sides with large undressed stones neatly laid, the interstice being filled up with small stones intermixed with earth. That at Ardneil stands on a finely isolated eminence called Auld Hill, and in front of the enclosure or praetorium there is an esplanade of 40, or 50 paces in length, very exactly formed and levelled" New Stat Acct [Statistical Account] |

This object is about 12 ch[ains] from the SEast end of Boyds[ton] Braes and is a distinct feature, it is about one chain in length from N to S, and about 70 links in greatest width, its [height] from the centre might be about 60 feet On the whole it presents a peculiar appearance more artificial than otherwise.
The slope on the South Side is precipitous and of much greater extent than the other sides.
The general opinion among the better class in the neighbourhood is that it was one of the chain or line of Early Forts the sites of which are still to be seen along the coast [namely *] |

Parish of West Kilbride County of Ayr [Page 153]
The name Castle (New Stat Acct [Statistical Account]) Hill or Hills cannot with propriety be applied to these eminences separately nor are they generally Known as such, the site of Fort described in this page is Known by some parties as Herby Hill from the simple fact of long weeds or herbs growing abundantly on the top of it. Still it would be irrelevant to write it as such on the plans.

Portions of this page are missing, including all the entries in the alternative spellings column.
There is also another comment written in pink and too faint to read much. It starts "All Historical quotations....."
The names after the the * are presumably the line of Forts referred to but the other * is not visible - probably due to the missing edge of the page. |
