[Situation] Towards N.E. [North East] of Kilmaurs Parish and N.W. [North West] side of Ayr County
A Considerable Village pleasantly situate upon the right bank of Carmel Water distant 2 miles from Kilmarnock and 6 from Irvine - consists chiefly of one Street - decorated with Town Hall or Council Chamber and flanked by alleys and back houses.- The houses are chiefly one Storey in height, inhabited for the most part by Craftsmen and Colliers. In the town are two Inns and several public houses - the Parish Church a Secession or United Presbyterian Church, and in S.W. [South West] suburb the Free Church and Parish School.- The population is about 1600. Twelve Councillors who have the exclusive privelege of electing two Bailies, a Treasurer, Fiscal and Clerk attend to the public interests of the Town, but the property belonging thereto is but trifling, the revenue scarcely amounting to £12,- This village or town was erected into a Burgh of Barony by Charter 2nd June 1527 granted by James V to Cuthbert Earl of Glencairn and his Son William Lord Kilmaurs.- At the Commencement of 15th Century it was called Cunningham. |

Extract from Appendix No. 1. Hopes Minor Practicks.
Besides the regular Religious Houses,
Abbacies, Priories & Convents, in Scotland at
the time of the Reformation, there were
several Colleges erected for secular Canons.
They were called "Praepositurae." or Collegiate Churches
& were governed by a Dean or Provost.
They were instituted for the performance
of Divine Service, and of Masses for
the Souls of the Founders & Patrons or
their Friends ~ These Institutions
consisted of Prebendaries or Canons, who
had their several degrees or Stalls, in which
they sat for singing more orderly the
Canonical Hours & they with their Dean
or Provost, composed the Chapter. They
were commonly erected out of several
Parish Churches united for that purpose,
or out of the Chaplainries that were
founded under the roof of their Churches.
They were about thirty three in number
and the seventeenth in Spottiswood's
List is:
'Kilmaures in the Shire of Air, founded
the 14th May, 1403. for a Provost &
eight Prebendaries, with two singing
Boys by Sir William Cuningham of
Kilmaures'

The ancient Church of Kilmaurs, was
dedicated to Saint Maure, a Scottish Saint
who is said to have died Anno. Dom: [Domini] 899.
She was commemorated on the 2nd November.
During the reign of William (1165 to 1214)
Robert, the son of Wernebald the progenitor
of the Glencairn Family, who held
the township of Cuningham under
Richard Morville Constable of Scotland
granted the church of Kilmaurs to
the Monks of Kelso
An account of the property of that
Abbacy made up in the reign of Robert
1st. (1306-1329) states that the Church of
Kilmaurs was then their property, &
it was of the value of £40 yearly
In the reign of James 5th. (1570) the
vicarage of Kilmaurs was taxed at
£2.13.4 being one tenth of the estimated
value. The Vicar at this time
paid 20 Marks annually to the
Curate. At the Reformation the
vicarage was held by Mr Andrew
Layng, & produced about £30 yearly.
The vicars Church lands had been
let for 20 years to Cuningham of
Robertland at the very small rent
of 8 Marks yearly. The lands appear
to have been of considerable
extent; at the Reformation they all
passed into lay hands - A portion
still called the "Girnal Croft," was in 1505

granted by Robert Abbot of Kelso to
Cuningham of Craigens for payment of
6/8 [£0.6.8] yearly.
In 1633, Charles 2nd. founding the Bishoprick
of Edinburgh, granted Kilmaurs
Church Tythes to the Dean of St. Giles.
The Church of Kilmaurs is of considerable
antiquity & appears to have undergone
many alterations. It has
always been the Burial place of the
family of Glencairn. Their Tomb which
is close to the Church was erected by Earl
James in 1660. The Church is beautifully
placed on an eminence near the town
of Kilmaurs, a Borough of Barony erected
in the reign of James 5. Its earliest charter
is granted in 1507 by Cuthbert Earl of
Glencairn. In 1811 it contained 750 Inhabitants.
The Stream called Kilmaurs or
Carmel Water, which rises in the parish
of Fenwich & after lingering around the
ancient towers of Rowallan & gliding
in mazy links thro' [through] the meadows of
Kilmaurs, falls into the Irvine in the
Parish of Dreghorn. In a hollow near
the bank of this Stream stands a ruined
tower & dovecot evidently part of the
Establishment founded by Sir William
Cuningham in 1403. An ancient orchard
occupies the ground between it and

the Church, & a rudely built well still

that remains of the Collegiate Church of Kilmaurs.

Chalmers appears to think that the
syllable Kil, the beginning of many
names of Ayrshire & of Scotch Localities
is without doubt derived from the Gaelic
Cil or Latin Cella, signifying "Burial
Place," but in the oldest papers, places
now spelled "Kil" appear as "Kyl" as
Kylmaures, Kylkirran. The name of
the district of Kyle is said to be derived
from a traditionary King Coilus
and perhaps some of these Ayrshire
Localities may owe their names to
some connexion [connection] with that district
rather than to their having been
burial places.
In an ancient M.S. [Manuscript] book known
as the "Affleck Manuscript" but titled
" The Antiquities of Airshire" The Tour
is mentioned in a table of distances
of places in Air as The Tour, west
syd, 4 myl fra Irving' Immediately
before it, is Achinhervie 2 myl south
fra the River, 4 myl fra Irving' The
Tour here alluded to is certainly the
ruined building near the Church of

Kilmaurs.
At Busby in the Parish of
Kilmaurs there was a chapel with
a separate endowment. After the
Reformation it was allowed to go
to Ruin & the endowment was appropriated
by the Patron. It belonged
to the Eglington Family in 1661 but
how or when it was acquired does
not appear. x - Busby Castle
is now the property of Mr William Wallace -
The Tower- (Tour) & Girnall Croft & also [Jocksthorn,] the site
of Kilmaurs (or Glencairn) Castle
the ancient residence of the
Lords of Glencairn & Kilmaurs
are now the property of Robert
Parker Adam, of Tour.
The Orchard is still an Orchard
& the Dove Cot entire - only the
sides of the old Tower is now
standing - but the Lady's Well
still affords the best water in
the neighbourhood -

Dear Sir
In reply to
your note as to the old
Tower (Hettin Tour) on my
property here - it stands
in the orchard, & was part
of some monastic a [Ecclesiastical]
Building, as you
will find stated in the
paper sent you by Mr
Buchanan - I understand
it was joined to the present
old Kirk at one time by
some sort of building,

of the truth of this I
cant [cannot] say - a subterranean

know of - Tour Garden
marked in your sketch
is the name now given
to the little farm, your Nos.
313. 314. 316. 318. 319 & 320
- old orchard is 314. The Girnal [Croft] is 316 & 318 - No.
319 is Called the "Dove Cot farm"
& 320 is the "Broomy Knowe" -
the Lady's well is marked at
the corner of No. 313 - alongside
of the Walk down the wood.

This Commanding eminence is east of Carmyle about 12 chains and is planted with Fir and Forest trees. There is the appearance of a Mound or Tumuli the eastern Side of which is partly traceable but it does not in any way resemble that of Greenhill. The tradition of the country relative to these objects is as follows that they were places where Justice was administered in the early ages from enquiries made there does not appear to have been any coffins or human remains found here. The authorities quoted Stated what is named above |

This object is on a considerable Hill and may be Considered a perfect Specimen of the Kind its is about 12 feet high and has a least diameter of about 90 links on top. It is supposed that Courts of Justice were held here in olden times, how far tradition is Correct on this point cannot now be well disputed, whether right or wrong. The farm steading takes its name from this Tumulus namely Greenhill.
I consider this rather a barrow than a Moot hill. [Signed] J. Bayly |

Extracts from Paterson's History of Ayrshire
[Left column]
Page 209 There was a chapel at
Busbie which had an appropriate
Endowment for its Chaplain. - After
the Reformation the Chapel was allowed
to fall into Ruins. Possibly this Site
cannot be identified.
[Right column]
Mauchline 24.5.56 [24 May 1856]
Sir
Attended to
[Left column]
Kilmaurs Castle. Of the Castle of Kilmaurs
described by Pont, there seems to be now
no certain remains. From Pont's Map
however, where the castle is dotted, and
Carmel Wood (still so called) the faire
parke by which it was [Environed], Some
idea of its Situation may be formed.
It appears to have stood Some distance
east of the church, probably as conjectured
by Robertson, on the farm called Jock's Thorn
where Some ruins can Still be pointed out.
It is curious that its position should be
a matter of dubiety - when Pont Surveyed
the district in 1608, the Castle of Kilmaurs
Existed in all the pomp of family distinction -
and now, about 240 years since,Or is its
Grandeur worn out even the traditional ruin
that its site cannot be identified with certainty.
[Right column] Supposed site shown
on trace on the
authority of R P Adam
Esqr. of Tour and others
[Left column]
"Kilmaurs House" - A seat of the Earls of
"Glencairn" - a portion of this building looks
Ancient, but I cannot find about the
date of its erection - can you obtain
any local information? to warrant its being
written in G. [German] text?
[Right column] At present the
date cannot be
established. The Earl
of Eglinton's Factor may
have some Documents
which will solve the matter.

Kilmaurs Parish -- [Left Side of page] Sir
[Right hand side of page]
Kilmarnock Colliery. The extent of
this name renders it quite inapplicable
to Maps and it might be extended to
Embrace even more Coal fields. The
names Thornton Colliery, Gatehead Colliery,
and Annandale Colliery, will however be
written, and Mr Morgan must See the
manager and mark on the traces the
limits within which these names should
be Severally written, as well as the
extent of Plan Colliery -- [Left side of page ] Done as ordered
Alluding to the Stone Coffins found upon
the Carmyle or Waterpark farm - Paterson's
History of Ayrshire Says "These graves
have been found within the limits of one
of three large barrows or tumuli, Situated
on either bank of the Carmel Water; the
tumulus to which they pertain being, as
already Stated upon Waterpark farm, and the
others being Situated upon Greenhill farm".
[Left hand side of page]
1 The plan when the
coffins were found was
one of the 3 barrows or
Tumuli referred to
2 The Site of the other was
pointed out by the Occupier
of Greenhill farm
[RHS]
The most remarkable of the three being situated close to Greenhill farm house. -- [LHS] 3 Yes
[Right hand side of page]
This still leaves one large tumulus -- [LHS] Site identified
unaccounted for on the Greenhill farm.
The occupier of that farm showed me
a place where he Supposed there might
have been a small tumulus and John Fulton
described to me the same spot where he
Said there had been a small one -
but the above quotation infers another
large tumulus on the Greenhill farm

[Left Column]
I fancied that what you have called
Bailliehill Mount was a Tumulus,
but perhaps this is not on the Greenhill farm? is it?
[Right column]
Bailliehill Mount is on
the farm of North Woodhill
[Left Column]
And do I understand you aright in
supposing that Bailliehill Mount is
Considered by the authorities quoted as
having been "a place where justice was
administered" in the same way as
the tumulus at Hendeanhill [?] and that on
the Waterpark farm?
[Right column] [Feint] James Brown Woodhill
and The Duke of Portland
Yes The authorities quoted
Stated so the name also
is in the favour of the Supposed
tradition
[Left column]
Can you throw any light upon this
third large tumulus? possibly the
History is in error
[Right column]
Yes now accounted for
See Traces and Name Sheet
History correct
[Left column]
The Telegraph posts are not to be
shewn in future - merely write
"Electric Telegraph" upon that Side
of the Railway upon which it is -
inform Messrs Kennedy and Stuart
[Right column]
Should be attended to
