"One of the parishes comprehended in the district of Cowal. Its name is derived from St Finan, an ecclesiastic of the 7th. century, and a disciple of St. Columba; it signifies the church or burying-place of St. Finan. It is about 17 miles in length, & varies from 3 to 5 or 6 miles in breadth. It stretches from South to North, - its southern extremity being Aird Lamont, or the promontory of Lamont, so called because it forms part of the estate of that name - This southern point is bounded by the sea, which separates it from the Island of Arran, the distance being between 3 and 4 leagues - On the North-West and West, it is bounded by Loch Fine; on the North and north-east, by the parishes of Stralachlan and Kilmodan; and on the east by Loch Riddon and part of the Kyles of Bute -
The parish being bounded on the West, South & East by water, has a great extent of coast, parts of which are steep & rocky - and other parts consist of low

lands or gradual declivities, there are several beautiful bays, though not of great extent also several headlands by which these bays are embraced. The rocks throughout the parish are almost all of one character - they consist chiefly of the mica-slate and have a general direction of N.E [North East] and S.W. [South West]. There is no market-town in the parish, the villages are Tignabruaich and Kames, the former is situated on the East side of the Kyles of Bute and mostly occupied by visitors from Glasgow & neighbourhood during the summer months - Kames strictly speaking is not a village it is joined to Tignabruaich and also contains many beautiful summer residences - it gives name to an adjoining Powder Works which are very extensive & manufacture mostly for the Government - there is another small hamlet or clachan where the parish church stands. besides the parish church another has been erected lately in the south-end of the Parish
The mansion houses in the parish are Ardlamont house, Ballimore house - and Otter house. |

A district name applying to the Southern part of Kilfinan Parish on the South-west, and East it is well defined by the sea, on the North it is not so well defined but is generally understood by the Native to be in a curved line from Caisteal Aoidhe (192.11) on the West, to the Pier at Tighnabruaich on the East (193.2) and is in the District of Cowal. The name Carry (on 203.2) appears to be a corruption of this name. |

A well known name applied to an extensive Gravel-bank jutting into Loch Fine, having a Beacon erected on its western extremity;
"Near the north end of the parish, there is a very remarkable & beautiful sandbank, which juts out in a serpentine form almost into the middle of Lochfine. This bank is said to be about 1800 yards in length from the shore to its extremity at Low Water. In spring tides it is entirely covered at high water, and at 3 hours after the turn of the tide till low water it is wholly uncovered to within a few yards of its extremity. As the [word] in the Gaelic language, descriptive of a projecting ridge or bank in the sea, is Oitir, hence the origin of the name, Otter, given to an adjoining estate."

The remains of what has been a very large cairn, Its whole extent is still plainly marked, & measures upwards of 40 yards long and about 20 broad. The only perfect remnant is at the north east end, where there are several stones or slabs placed on end and roofed over the top with other slabs. At the head is a large oval flat stone supported by two upright pillars, after the manner of a cromlech. At the south west corner there is a small erect stone, but the greater part of the cairn has been cleared away.
"There are also to be seen the remains of what are called borradhs or cairns ...... The largest was about 2 miles north from the Church ......... The pile of stones has long ago been completely removed for the purpose of building dikes."

Castle (Site of) [notes]
"On a rocky point, on the coast of Lochfine, about a mile below the church,
is to be seen the vestige of a building called Caisteal Mhic Eobhuin ie McEwen's Castle
It was a wide, but irregular building, neither square nor circular, perhaps nearer a pentagon
than any other plan: it does not appear to have been built with any kind of mortar; but, from
the quantity of rubbish, it must have been of a considerable height. This McEwen was the Chief of
a clan, & proprietor of the northern division of the parish, called Otter. His possession of it
must have been of very remote antiquity; for there is no record nor tradition that says who
possessed the property before them."
Old Stat: [Statistical] Account.
"On a rocky point on Lochfyne there stood in 1700 the ruins of
Castle MacEwen, the stronghold of the earlier lords of the Otter."

193 |
There are three standing stones a little to the N.W. [North West] of this, one about 30 feet south of the cross road, standing in the ploughed field, two others a little north of this one, standing in the hedge on the road side, they are large flag like stones, about four or five feet high above the surface, their tradition seems lost, but it is conjectured they are monumental, probably from the fact of the stone cists already described, and several others found in and about Tighnabruach, Mr. Johnston, Kames Farm, seen the hammer, from him I got the description |

the estate on which this hill is situated is known & recognised as such There is no

Three small hillocks at Ardlamont point, the name signifies the hillocks of the mull men, from a tradition that a battle was fought here between the Lamonts and the mull men
Mr. McCorqudale the factor calls them the "Watch Towers" of the Lamonts"
They are natural hillocks caused by the upheaving of a huge irregular dike, (running nearly east & west.) and seemingly improved by art. They command a view to the entrance of Lochfine & the Kyles of Bute |
