Turriff - anciently written Turra, Torra, or Turrued, and is still vulgulary pronounced, is said to signify a mound or height. The Village is pleasantly situated on a broad table-land bounding the Burn of Turriff, and is sheltered on the north by the hill of Wrae, and on the east by that of Cotburn. The houses are chiefly built of red sandstone, quarried in the neighbourhood of Delgaty Castle. It is a burgh of barony. In 1511 James 4 granted to Mr. Thomas Dickson, prebend of Turriff, a charter, erecting Turriff into a burgh of barony, and constituting the prebend Superior of the burgh. [continued on next page] |

The Site of an ancient house by some called "Templar's Leu", by others called "Templar's House". Supposed to have been inhabited by the Knights Templar's in the thirteenth century, they were a body established at Jerusalem about the year 1118, and vowed to defend the Temple, and to guard and entertain Pilgrims and Strangers; They wore a white habit with a red cross, and were called by some the Red Friars. They were a Secular body as well as religious, therefore their houses had no dedicatory name, further than, Templar's House or religious House. |

This name applies to the Remains of the old parish Church of Turriff, dedicated to St. Congan. It is Situated at the West End of High Street, on the Summit of a lofty bank, sloping down rapidly on the South touards the Burn of Turriff. The date of its erection is not certainly known, but it is supposed to have been built in the eleventh century, whether it was founded by St. Congan himself, or dedicated to his memory by another founder is uncertain. It was originally 120 feet long by 10 feet wide, without any architectural features suggestive of its date. In 1214 Marjory, Countess of Buchan gave it to the monks of St. Thomas of Abroath, the grant being

Confirmed by William the Lion, & Adam the Bishop of Aberdeen. In 1412 it was erected into a prebend of the Cathedral of St. Machar of Aberdeen. The only part of the structure which now remains, is the Eastern part of the building called "the quire" and the belfry, the later contains a fine-toned bell. The erection of the quire can be satisfactorily assigned to the first part of the sixteenth century, when it was built by Mr. Alexander Lyon, Chanter of Murray |

On the top of a cultivated hillock situated on the East side of the old turnpike road leading from Turriff to Huntly, known by the name of "Widdie Hillock", was till recently to be seen, a circular enclosure of stones and earth substantially built, it was about 70 yards in circumference. There was originally a heap of stones near its centre. There is no satisfactory tradition connected with it. Some are of the opinion that is was originally a Druidical Circle, while others are of opinion that it was a small Camp in connection with Lathinow the Pictish Prince. The stones was removed for building purposes in 1830 not a vestage now remains. |

of the name of Gordon, upwards of a centuary [century] and a half ago. Whether constant residents, or visitors at their estate I am unable to say, wishing to return to their native land for ever, they sold the estate to a man of the name of "Innes"; who is said to have taken advantage of their ignorance, of money matters and the transfer of property in this Country, and as local tradition says, he never prospered in his ill gotten estate, and in a fit of remorse Committed suicide, he is said to be buried on the summit of the hill of Tod's Fauld, where a Cairn stood till lately, well known by the name "Innes Cairn".
Dorlaithers is supposed to be a corruption of Lathmon of Dun-lathmon, the name of a pictish Prince who is supposed to have had his seat in this district. |

The one on the East side of the dam, appears to have been notable, and the virtues of which could not be secured but by a pecuniary offering to its Patron, and hence the name of the farm where it exists, "Silverwells". Neither of the wells, in whatever veneration they may formerly have been held, are now of any great repute. |

HATTON CASTLE |
Hatton Castle |

Alexander Anderson Mains of Hatton
Alexander McQueen Lower oldmill |
019 |
Formerly Hatton Lodge. But rebuilt in the years 1812-13, & 14, and well Known by Hatton Castle since then, it is a Square building, having at each corner a round tower, which rise to the full height of the building, it is situated about three and a half mile South of the Town of Turriff. And having in that direction, a long and commanding view. Balquholly is the Name of the Estate, attached to this Castle that being the old original name, the grounds are beautifully laid out, with Wood, Lakes, and ornamental Paths. etc. and is the property of G. Duff. Esq. of Hatton.
Balquholly is supposed to mean the "house in the Wood". This ancient feudal designation is now changed into the modern title of Hatton. The Castle Balquholly was formerly the seat of Mouat of Balquholly, the chief of that name, and for many generations of considerable note in the north. It was also a seat of Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty when he opposed the Covenanters in 1609. It then past into the hands of James A. Erskine, brother to the laird of Pittodrie, and was sold in 1727 to Duff of Hatton. The original Castle of Balquholly was supposed to have been built about the year 1252. |

A name given to the site of a Ford that was originally of some note, but now Extinct, and has been for a long time. During the wars of the Covenant in 1639, Montrose hearing that Huntly intended to attack the village of Turriff, By means of a forced march, Montrose reached Turriff before Huntly. No sooner were they thus established than the van of Huntly's army arrived, and finding the town so formidably occupied, they drew off to the fields in the neighbourhood of Towie-Barclay, Crossing the Burn of Balquholly, wither the rest of his company was begun to move. This place was afterwards known by the name " Broade Foorde of Towie" or "Broad Ford of Towie". The later is still well known by the oldest inhabitants in the locality. |

New St. [Statistical] Account |

The old Castle of Towie-Barclay stands on the north bank of the River Ythan, and was for many centuries, the property and residence of a very ancient Scottish family, not yet, it is said, extinct in this vicinity. Over what was once the chief Entrance is inscribed the date 1136. Notwithstanding this mentioned date, it is believed that the Castle was not built before 1593, while there are dates 1604 and 1695 on the more modern parts of the building. Enough remains of the original edifice to indicate the imposing scale upon which it was designed. The lofty hall, with its groined and vaulted ceiling, and circular arches is a fine specimen of the ancient architecture of Scotland. It was tolerably entire till about 1792, when the roof, turrets, and embrasures were removed, & the height reduced to two stories. It was

purchased by the Earl of Findlator in 1753, and in 1792 it was sold to the trustees of Robert Gordon's Hospital in Aberdeen. In the year 1639, "Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty" appeared in arms among the northern confederates, who opposed the Covenanters. His place of residence, named Balquholly, had been plundered of muskets and carbines by the lairds of Delgaty and Towie. Having obtained the assistance of other gentlemen, he, on the 10th. of May, made an attempt to recover his weapons of war from the house of Towie; but the inmates being aware of their approach, manned the place so effectually that an attack seemed to be hopeless. One man was killed by a shot from the Castle, and this is said to have been the first blood shed by the Covenanters. |
