038 ; 039 ; 047 ; 048 |
A parish in Aberdeenshire bounded on the North by Cruden Parish East by Slains, South by Foveran and on the West by Ellon and Udny Parishes. It extends in a semi-circular curve from North East to South West to about nine miles and averages from 1 1/2 to 2 miles in breadth the surface is slightly undulating and is chiefly cultivated. The name Logie is understood to signify a low lying place and the word Buchan is an addition made to the name from its lying wholly or in part in that district. The Ythan enters the parish through a barrier of rocks (gneiss) which in a calm evening reverberate short sentences very distinctly. On the south side are some considerable indentations in the rocks, and adjoining these is an opening through the superincumbent masses called the ("Needles Eye") the threading of which is rather a dangerous amusement for young people, that the sea has made, if any) a very slow and almost imperceptible repeat of late years in this quarter is very certain. For in a very accurate plan of the Estate of Tarty, drawn in the year 1762, the contents of a small island called (Inch Geke) situated about a mile and a half from the sea, are 3 Acres 1 rood and 11 falls, and now but 3 acres, 2 roods and 10 falls, the addition of 39 falls being off the River side, where from the increased cultivation on its banks of late years, it is not wonderful that some additional soil should be deposited. Dr. [Doctor] Anderson, in his report, before quoted states that he had observed the "Sleek of Tarty" a glossy space of 92 acres on the south side of the Ythan, surrounding Inch Geke on three sides, and overflowed every tide by the sea, to have risen some feet during the thirty years he resided at Monkshill, in the neighbouring parish of Foveran.
Upon the 23rd February 1644, every estate was compelled to raise a certain number of men to recruit the Scottish Army, then in England, the Committee in Aberdeen sent forty musketeers to plunder the lands of the lairds of Rainieston, Tipperty, Tarty, and the goodwife of Artrochie, non subscribers of the Covenant in this parish. Nor were the proprietors of the above named Estates the only heritors of Logie Buchan who opposed the Covenanters; for Spalding farther informs us, that upon the 27 April of the same year, forty four soldiers belonging to Mr. William Seton of Shethin, Mr. James Buchan of Auchmacoy and Mr. James Seton of Pitmedden, who then had lands in this parish

[Continued from page 1]
It appears from Robertsons Index of scarce charters, that the Buchans of Auchmacoy were proprietors of that Estate so far back as the year 1318, holding it of the Earl of Buchan until the forfeiture of the too powerful Cummings in the reign of King Robert Bruce. In 1503 James 4th gave Andrew Buchan of Auchmacoy, a new charter, and erected his lands into a free barony, which has been inherited by his lineal male descendants ever since. There is a field of excellent clay, of considerable extent and depth on the farm of Westfield of Auchmacoy, upon which, in the year 1834, Mr. Brown the tenant, erected a brick work. The church of Logie Buchan is situated fifteen miles north of Aberdeen, the nearest market town. The nearest post town is Ellon which lies two miles west. Considering the great length of the parish the church is as conveniently situated as it could be. It was built in 1787 to hold 400 persons, and is in good repair. The manse was built in 1775.
As to fuel the mosses in this parish are almost exhausted, but a considerable quantity of peat and turf are brought from other parishes. Coals imported at Newburgh are the principal fuel. The extent of the Glebe, as laid down in the plan of Tarty, before mentioned is 5 acres, 2 roods, 33 falls including the toft besides the usual privileges, "Extracts from the Statistical Account of Scotland, 1843".
Fullertons Gazetteer in speaking of Logie Buchan says, the River Ythan, here navigable at full tide for small sloops, crosses it from West to East, dividing it into nearly equal portions. Precipices of gneiss rock flank the stream at the part where it enters the parish and give a very distinct echo to short sentences in a calm evening. The Boat of Logie is a well known tune having reference to this parish but the still better known song of "Logie o'Buchan" refers to a gardener about the middle of last century at Logie in the parish of Crimond. Logie Buchan is traversed by the road from Peterhead to Aberdeen - the parish is in the Presbytery of Ellon and Synod of Aberdeen. There is no portion of this parish detached nor portion, or portions of any other parish enclosed within the boundary of this parish.

A modern and elegant turretted Mansion "The house admirably situated, is built in the Elizabethan style, (after a plan by Mr. Burn, Edinburgh, in 1832-3) and forms a striking object in the landscape, The ground to the westward slopes gently to the margin of a little stream, and forms a beautiful lawn, embellished with clumps of trees and shrubs, and to the north rises to a gentle eminence, thickly clothed with wood. On the South and East, the house overlooks a steep glen, tastefully laid out and cut into walks, Beyond this is seen the noble sweep of the basin formed by the Ythan, with the Sea in the distance. A finer situation can hardly be imagined". The old Mansion house formerly stood where the coach house. stables &c. now are. "It appears from Robertson's Index of Scarce Charters, that the Buchans' of Auchmacoy were proprietors of that estate so far back as the year 1318 holding it of the Earl of Buchan until the forfeiture of the too powerful Cummins in the reign of King Robert Bruce. In 1503 James IV gave Andrew Buchan of Auchmacoy a new charter, and erected his lands into a free barony, which has been inherited by his lineal male descendants ever Since. The first of them having been a Son of Cummin, Earl of Buchan (whence Auchmacoy still bears the Coat of Cummin, Earl of Buchan, with a mollet for difference) who had got this small estate from his father, and did, notwithstanding the almost general rebellion of his Clan against King Robert I adhere so faithfully to that Prince that he was allowed to retain his estate (when the other Cummins were forfeited) upon conditions of his taking a new name, whereupon he chose that of Buchan. Major General Thomas Buchan, who adhered most faithfully to King James VII and King James VIII after the Revolution having maintained that cause by his sword, both in Ireland and Scotland" was a member of this family.

"About a mile above the ferry the Burn of Forvie falls into the river.
This brook or burn takes its rise about six miles up the country, on the northern side of the hill of Dudwick, and is augmented by springs among the hills of Auchleuchries, Below Pitlurg the burn flows through several large and well cultivated farms, among these are Nether Leask and Artrochie, to the left and right respectively of the stream
