depth of 4' and in the process a comparatively
recent interment had been disturbed. The
broken boards of the coffin still bearing
the cheap silvered mountings lay on the upcast
with the top of the cranium & bones of its
occupant. The very cords used to lower the
coffin were still in existence!

Latheron Castle.
On the right bank of the Latheron burn
about 120 yds. [yards] below the road bridge at
Latheron are the fragmentary ruins of
Latheron Castle. A portion of the N. [North] angle
of a rectangular building with some 15'
of the NE [North East] wall having a thickness of 7'
remains.

Celtic Cross. Latheron
Built into the W. [West] wall of the old barn
by the roadside about 1/4 m. [mile] S. [South] of Latheron
Post Office is a stone incised with a
portion of a celtic cross. Its position
is 13' from the N. [North] end of the wall and
3'.9" above the ground. The stone is
2'.3" in length by 1'.1" in breadth. The
upper arm of the cross & the greater
parts of the side arms are gone. The
stem remains for a length of 1'.7" and
increases in width from 6" at the intersec:
:tion to 8 1/2" at its present termination.
