Cairn Achkinloch (21)
Some 40 - 50yds. [yards] SSE. [South South East] of the SE. [South East] end of the
standing stones at Achkinloch are the ruins
of a chambered cairn. The cairn is much
dilapidated and much stone has been re:
:moved from it. Near the centre two large
slabs stand upright facing E. and W. [East and West] 7' to
8' apart indicating the position of the chamber
the plan of which is not, however, evident.
The diameter has been about 75'.
Joined the family at Tigh-na-Mara, Thurso
in the evening.
1st Augt. [August]
A lovely day but I had almost a whole week's
notes to write up so did not get out until
the late afternoon. After the continuous soak:
:ings of the last fortnight I have got a cold!
2nd Augt. [August]
Still engaged writing up notes. I am trying
to get an assistant which is a difficulty.
Bicycled to Scrabster & walked to Holburn Head
before tea.
3rd Augt. [August]
Finished writing up notes. An awfully wet
morning. Thurso Show - I am taking an
afternoon off as I have worked continuously
through the last three Saturdays.
