It is high & precipitous on the west Side. Around it are a number of Small rocks. About ¾ Mile N by E [North by East] of this rock is situated The Little Scare.

OS1/35/88/2 BIG SCAR Big Scar Big Scar Peter Gibson Port William 036A A Large Rock, Situated in the Bay of Luce, and Supposed to be about 9 or 10 miles from Port William, This Rock is very precipitated On the West Side. On it is a Trigl [Trigonometrical]Station Called by Trig [Trigonometrical] Party Big Scar.Previous to the erection of the Light-house at the Mull of Galloway and in fogy weather, Ships were Sometimes Wrecked on this Rock, It is inhabited by a large No. of Seagulls and other wild birds. The Seals are plentyful about the Scar Rocks, and are often Seen basking themselves on the Rocks Under the Rays of the Mid-day Sun. Some of the inhabitants of Glenluce, Port William & Drumore, frequently goes out to this Rock On purpose, to rob the Gulls nests, and Seldom fails to bring Some large Baskets of Eggs.
