PORT WILLIAM 029 a considerable village and sea port on the coast of luce bay, situate on the coast road between glenluce and whithorn 14 miles south east of the former &p. w. n. west of the latter, it was errected in the year 1770 by sir william maxwellof monrieth,in honour of whom it is named. it consists chiefly of well built cottages all slated, the inhabitants of which are chiefly fishermen,mariners & agriculturalists , in it is a neat chapelbelonging to the united presbyterian church of scotland, school house post office,4 public houses & several small grocers shopsshops. also in 1788 a small barracks house was erected for the accomodation of the military & customs house officers, which was sent occationallyfor the suppression of smuggling. there is also a market in it every wednesday attended by farmers chiefly, who transacts business with each other, they are accomodated with a banker from wigtown on the same day. tha harbour is small but safe( for which see description) population about 600
