It extends from the influx of the River Bladenoch with Wigtown Bay to Innerwell Point, it includes Orchardton Bay, Brandy Port, Innerwell Fishery, and Innerwell Port. It is situate along the west Side of Wigtown Bay. -

OS1/35/68/6 WIGTOWN BAY Wigtown Bay Wigtown Bay J. McHaffie, Esq. Mr. J. Muir. 026 [Situation] - At S.E. [South East] of Wigtownshire forming in part the boundary between Wigtownshire & Kirkcudbrightshire.- A large bay or estuary at the S.E. [South East] side of Wigtownshire at the influx of the River Cree and Bladenoch with the Sea. It runs inland a distance of about 10 miles till it terminates in the Cree gradually varying in breath. Its greatest breadth from Garlieston Bay or [Crugleton] to the point of Ross is 10 mile. Its depth is various generally between 20 & 30 feet deep. The most important harbours or [landing] places in 'this bay' is Carty, [Wigtown], and Garlieston. See Statisl . Acct. [Statistical Account] of Scotland Published 1841.

The date 1581 with a coat of arms nearly defaced is visible over the doorway which is probably the time of its building. It is about 40 feet high. It is situate on the farm of Carsluith & is the property of Miss Hannah of Kirkdale.

A remarkable cave the entrance of which is Situate about 15 feet above the High water mark. It is attained by climbing a Slight precipice, it then descends perpendicularly for about 10 feet where it forms a sort of gallery running horizontally for about 250 links & from 3 to 8 feet in breath & from 2 1/2 to 12 ft. in height. It is said to be the cave alluded to in Guy Mannering by Sir Walter Scot as the Smugglers rendezvous & is named after 2 Conspicuous Characters in that novel.

A Cave in the Heughs of Barholme, the entrance of which is about 3 feet above high water mark, it extends for about 2 chains with a depression of about 1 foot in 5 & from 3 to 6 feet in breadth and from 2 1/2 to 8 feet in height. This cave is supposed to have been a place of refuge by the Covenanters in the time of the religious Struggle [between] the Presbyterians & Episcopacy.
