016 [Situation] West of White Loch and Castle Kennedy.
A Small village (scarcely of sufficient extent to be called a village) in which is the Parish Church and school house the former of which was built in 1777 is a small Stone built edifice with 3 galleries and is capable of accommodating 400 persons there is a large grave yard attached - The Minister is the Revd. [Reverend] James Ferguson of Soulseat whose living is £258.12.3 the school house and school-master's house form one range & is a well constructed stone building built in 1829 the School house can accommodate 100 scholars average attendance is about 60 the master's Salary is the minimum. - In the village is one Public house and a few cottages of inferior description occupied by working people of the poorer class - The name "Inch" which in the Gaelic or Irish signifies Island took its origin (as tradition asserts) from the island in White Loch at present called "Inch Island"
