[North West] of Wigtownshire and forms a large bay and natural harbour where vessels of Considerable tonnage can approach very near the town. In 1821 a handsome pier has been Completed which adds much to the accommodation of the Shipping &c, the harbour dues collected in 1846 was £160 there are two Steam boats attend this port one plies between it and Glasgow the other to Ayre the Glasgow Steamer goes occasionally to Belfast. This town owes its rise to its advantageous Situation which renders it at present the principal town in Galloway. It was created a Royal Burgh in 1617 by James VI. The Corporation Consists of a provost two bailies a dean of guild and 15 Councillors including a treasurer in all 18 members This burgh with the others of wigtownshire unite in returning one member to parliament. The present member is Sir John McTaggart of Ardwell. The Shipping and trade of this town have considerably encreased of late years. The population of the town in 1841 including suburbs was 4878. There are three banks in the town. One a branch of the Union Bank of Scotland another that of the British Linen Companys Bank and a branch of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Bank. There are in the town and Suburbs 9 places of public worship. In the town there are 4 good Inns. The number of houses in the town licenced for the Sale of Spiritous liquors are 51 there are 8 fairs in the year for the Sale of black cattle and 3 or 4 for the Sale of horses. Recently a gaol has been erected on an improved plan the building occupied for many years past as a prison being an old Castle Close

[Parish] of Leswalt A Spring of soft water which rises in the tide marK about 73 linKs from high water on the southern coast of Loch Ryan and near the easteren end of the village of Clayhole This Spring is considered an antiquity as it seems to have been alluded to by Symson in 1684 (see Chambers Calidonia Vol 3 P 437) this spring is about 5 linKs in diameter and about 3 inches deep and is frequently covered with the tide. it is well Know by this name in the neighbourhood.

Which before it was widened flooded the low lying Ground at this place. And Perhaps there was no Bridge on the Road when this Place got the name William Buchanan says that this Place took its name from the Small Stream & Bridges Conveneant to the houses. Town ClerK Stranraer Archibald McMecKan Stranraer 016 A Considerable Sea port town & burgh Commodiously Situated at the Southern end of Loch Ryan a long arm of the Sea which projects about 9 miles into the N.W. [North West] of Wigtownshire and forms a large bay & natural harbour where Ships of considerable tonnage can approach very near the town. In 1821 a handsome pier had been Completed which adds much to the accommodation of Shipping. This town owes its rise to the above advantages which renders it at present the principal town in Galloway. It was fast Created a Royal burgh in 1617 by James VI. The Corporation consists of a provost 2 bailies a dean of guild & 15 Councillors including a treasurer in all 18 members this burgh with the others of wigtownshire unite in sending one member of parliament the present member is Sir John McTaggart of Ardwell the Shipping & trade have considerably encreased of late years. The population of the town including the suburbs in 1841 was 4878 at present there are 9 places of worship in the town & Suburbs. There are 4 good Inns in the town. The number of houses licenced for the Sale of Spirituous liquors are 51. There are 8 fairs in the year for the Sale of black cattle & 3 or 4 for the Sale of horses. there are 3 banks [Continued]

Town ClerK Stranraer Archibald McMecKan Stranraer 016 [Continued] in the town one a branch of the Union BanK of Scotland The British Linen Company's BanK and the Edinburgh & Glasgow BanK recently a gaol has been erected on an improved plan the building occupied previously as the prison being an old castle which was for many years past occupied as a prison here are also an academy built in 1841 A handsome building of the Elizabethan Style there are a number of the worKing people employed in weaving in the employment of Glasgow houses. there are several employed at fishing and as Sailors & many in the outsKirts of the town are agricultural labourers &c Stranraer is the seat of a presbytery of the Same name. The name Stranraer Seems to be of difficult derivation but it appears to be more liKely from the words Strand Raw Signifying the row of houses along the rivulet Strandraw became in time to be named & written Strandrawer and afterwards Stranraer The number of Vessels belonging to the Port of Stranraer registered 31st. Exports farm produce, Vessels from 8 to 80 Tons Burthen can unload here According to the State of the tides. At from 8 to 18 feet of water. There ar two regular Steamers arives here daily (viz) One from Glasgo & one from Ayr. The Glasgo Steamer Sails ocasionaly to Belfast Near the North East end of the Pier. There is a Wooden Structure Called the Steam Boat Wharf.
