016 A handsome building Of the Elizabethan Style Occupied as Academy built in 1844 by private Subscription and a Small Government Grant £465 the whole Cost of Erection was £1800 the Site play Grounds for the Scholars &c which is about an acre was granted by the Earl of Stair the property is vested in Trustees Chosen by the Subscribers And town council Of Stranraer it is Partly endowed And Supported by private Subscription this together with the Scholars fees Constitutes its Support, education is Classical and elementary It is intended as a school for the Mechanics Labourers &c Children as well as for the Higher Classes of Society the Scholars both in the higher but lower school are on a moderate scale
