in the town one a branch of the Union BanK of Scotland The British Linen Company's BanK and the Edinburgh & Glasgow BanK recently a gaol has been erected on an improved plan the building occupied previously as the prison being an old castle which was for many years past occupied as a prison here are also an academy built in 1841 A handsome building of the Elizabethan Style there are a number of the worKing people employed in weaving in the employment of Glasgow houses. there are several employed at fishing and as Sailors & many in the outsKirts of the town are agricultural labourers &c Stranraer is the seat of a presbytery of the Same name. The name Stranraer Seems to be of difficult derivation but it appears to be more liKely from the words Strand Raw Signifying the row of houses along the rivulet Strandraw became in time to be named & written Strandrawer and afterwards Stranraer

December 1846 was 23 tonnage 1283 tons consisting of brigs schooners & Sloops the creeks belonging to this Port registered Same date are as follows Drumore 6 vessels 215 tons PortpatricK 5 vessels 254 tons Ballantrae 2 vessels 47 tons total 36 vessels 1799 tons
