An endowed School founded by the late Samuel Douglas Esqr. of Jamaica died 1799 The property (after some trouble and litigation) has been invested agreeably to the terms of the will, in lands in the parish of Ballintrae, Ayrshire. They yield a rental of between 200£ [£200] and 300£ [£300] in a year. After paying a Master 80£ [£80] and other expenses, the Trustees are to nominate on the foundation, as many boys at 20£ [£20] a year each for board, education and clothing as the funds will permit. The school is built on a piece of [Ground] extending to three acres, presented by the Earl of Galloway and was opened in 1834 |

A considerable Market and Post Town on the River Cree, on the eastern boundary of the Parish, it also lies on the Borders of Wigtonshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. It lies on the Great Road from Dumfries to Portpatrick. The Parish Church is situated in this Town besides 2 others belonging to different bodies of Presbyterian dissenters and 1 Roman Catholic Chapel. Population in the year 1831 was 2241. Market Day Friday. (Note) The portion of the Town from about the Linen Company Bank (Westward) was in 1781 called Newton Dashwood and the other portion was called Newton Douglas, but since the whole has become the property of the Earl of Galloway The Town has been called Newtonstewart. |
