013 [Situation] On the eastern Boundary of the Parish.
A considerable Market and Post Town on the River Cree, on the eastern boundary of the Parish, it also lies on the Borders of Wigtonshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. It lies on the Great Road from Dumfries to Portpatrick. The Parish Church is situated in this Town besides 2 others belonging to different bodies of Presbyterian dissenters and 1 Roman Catholic Chapel. Population in the year 1831 was 2241. Market Day Friday. (Note) The portion of the Town from about the Linen Company Bank (Westward) was in 1781 called Newton Dashwood and the other portion was called Newton Douglas, but since the whole has become the property of the Earl of Galloway The Town has been called Newtonstewart.
