This Name 'Edlrig'
as far as I can learn applies
to places that are or were considered
wild, or where the haunt of witches
ghosts &c.
Dr. [Doctor] Jamieson gives 'Elid' as
signifying 'Old' and it may
be of Saxon Origin as 'Eld'
old & Rig a ridge. meaning
perhaps Old Ridge and hence
Eldrig.
'Burns' the poet makes use
of the word eldritch, thus
'The Creature grain'd an eldritch laugh'
and according to this sense, it signifies
ghastly, frightful.
It is not unlikely that Eldrig
is the primitive word and 'eldritch'
the adjective derived from it.
Eldrig being understood to mean
a wild place haunted by
spirits. Or, It may be
derived from the two
