012 | [Situation] About ⅜ mile north of Greenburn A neat building one storey high, and slated; used as a School, exclusively for the children of the Colliery and Miners employed in the Coalpits and Ironmines of the Coltness Company. the average attendance is 230 - 150 boys and 80 girls: there is a separate room for the girls at the west end of the building, besides a plain education, Latin and mathematics are taught; and in the girls department Sewing is taught, these being considered as extras and paid for as such: the School is supported by the Colliers and miners, all of whom pay weekly a certain sum into a fund for the purpose of paying for the erection of the School and the education of the children; although the Coltness Iron Company paid for the erection of the School, yet the workmen must be considered the proprietors of it as they are bound to refund the amount by instalments with interest to the Company there are school fees paid, which are |
