This is an endowed School, recently erected, and supported by a mortification of £3250, and a further sum of £1000 left by the late Mr James Wilson, who was a merchant at Whitburn; there are 3 other Schools besides this, all being supported as the present one (one in Whitburn; one in Harthill, parish of Cambusnethan and one in Shotts village, parish of Shotts Coy [County] Lanark. In addition to the above Sums, there is deposited in the Sinking fund £40 (£10 to each School for the making repairs and improvements as the trustees may think necessary; there are 8 trustees who have the management of these Schools.
The present School is a neat building 2 Storeys high and slated, the upper storey being occupied by the Teacher and the lower storey used as the Schoolroom: the average attendance is 70 - 40 boys and 30 girls; small School fees only are paid, but those children whose parents are unable to pay are educated free. besides a plain education Latin, Geography, Geometry, Stenography and Vocal Music are taught, and French if required. The teacher is entitled to the same privileges as a Parochial Teacher having free house, garden etc, but his yearly income is rather less than that of a Parish Teacher, and besides being paid his share of the balance of the mortification at the end of the year after deducting all repairs, there is the interest of £40, the amount obtained for the old School House and the interest of the sum obtained from the Coltness Iron Company for the minerals upon which the new School is built added to his salary.
