[County] Map 004 ; 005 ; 008 ; 009 [Situation] In the West Portion of the County A parish in the extreme west of the County Linlithgow projecting for Some distance between Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. It is an elongated band of country Stretching from north=east to South-west and it is bounded on the north west Side by LanarKshire, Stirlingshire, and Linlithgow, on the north-east end by Linlithgow, on the South east Side by Bathgate and LanarKshire and on the Southwest end by LanarKshire. Its greatest length is nearly 10 miles its greatest breadth is nearly 3 and its supercificial area is about 16.3 Square miles Polness Burn a tributary of the Avon and afterwards the Avon itself jointly traces nearly the whole of the north western boundary and the former expands at one place into a lochlet about half a mile in circumference Coal occurs but not as it would Seem in much abundance. Iron Stone of good quality occurs in two Seams each 5 inches thick. Sandstone and whinstone are quarried for the Construction both of houses and of fences. This parish is in the presbytery of

Jardine, BlacKridge farm, who owns all the land on which the village stands. It Contains a small Ph. [Parish] Church, a Ph. [Parish] School & one supported by the Parishioners, two Small Shops & a Public house - it also Contains a branch Post Office, which is in a private house & has Only been established a few weeks - There is One delivery and one despatch, the former at 1 p.m. and the latter at 4 p.m.
