A small eminence the surface of which is arable. The property of the Earl of Roseberry. It is supposed to be the site of some great battle, the particulars of which are not known in the locality. (See the Statistical Account of Mid Calder parish.) The whole of Maukes Hill is on the north side of the River Almond; and not on both sides as stated in the Statistical Account for Livingstone. But the field of battle is supposed to have extended over both sides.

Site of Battle not written on 1/2500 plan
OMO [Ordnance Mapping Office]

The Site of Battle refered to above is already written on the adjoining plan
Co. [County] Edinburgh as it is there alone the remains of interments &c. were that would
indicate such an event. And as there were no remains found on this side
the river perhaps it is better not write it on Maukes Hill.
