This is the Remains of what appears to have been a Very Strong Camp or Hill Fort. It is of a Circular form and in tolerable preservation. The Rema [Remains] of the Works are quite distinct and Can be traced without any difficulty: they are Composed of Earth, chiefly, in which are embedded Some large rough stones. - On the north side it was almost Inaccessible and required no defences; but on the South and East the remains of two Circular defences are quite distinct, and the faint traces of an Intermediate one. -- This is generally Called in the Locality a "Roman Camp", but from its Construction, shape, etc. I consider it one of those ancient Hill Forts. |

I have been informed that it has merely been a private residence, built in a castellated form; and was never a place of strength. It was an ancient seat of the Durhams. James Durham the reformer visited there from Wedderburn in 1640, but it is supposed to be far older than that period. |
