023.02 ; 023.06 A Small lake Situated on elevated table land, Nearly a Mile in length, by about one fourth mile wide, Said to be deep to the N.E. [North East] but Shallow to the west. "Loch Coulter is about 2 miles in Circumference, Shallow to the west but very deep to the N.E. [North East]. In 1755 it was greatly agitated, & it was then, it is supposed, that a large Stone, in weight about a ton, was raised from its bed & Carried towards the shore; the Cairn of StoCes with which it is Surrounded is generally covered with water." Statistical Account of Parish. The Stone and Cairn were removed Some years ago. Property of Mr Murray, Polmaise.
