017.12 | A Manufacturing Country Village with a population of about 2200 Situated on the direct road from Stirling to Falkirk and between 2 and 3 miles from the former, it is composed of one principal Street and 3 or 4 Small branches, the buildings are generally 2 Storeys high and Slated, it contains 3 churches, 2 manses two Schoolhouses one Postoffice Eight Public houses 4 Carpet Mills, two Cloth Mills, one Tannery, and Several Small Shops; the Mills are from one to 4 Storeys high but Small in dimension, worked by the Bannock Burn which runs through the Village and over which there are two Substantial Stone Bridges. one on the old road which forms the principal Street the other on the new road now the Turnpike, the population are mostly employed in the manufacture of carpets and cloth. there is Very little business done at the Tannery, nearby to each tenement is attached a Small patch of land or garden, the old part of the Village is on both banks of the Bannock Burn the South Side is Steep and uneven the buildings very irregular on this Side the north is tolerable level and buildings more regular, there is neither a market or Fair held in the Village it is the property of Several person but cheifly that of William Wilson Esqr and Brothers. |
