This line was opened in 1840, and since then has been in full operation. Mineral traffic only was conducted on it for some time after its opening, but it was eventually extended by a short line called the Slamannan Junction Railway, which united it with the Edinburgh & Glasgow line, since which time both passenger and Mineral traffic has been conducted on it. the cuttings, embankments and bridges, which are extensive, and numerous, are all formed for a double railway, though only a single way of rails has been laid. There is about four miles of it in this parish. Property of the Monkland Railway Company.
