The etymology of Polmont is uncertain. Most probably it is derived from a Celtic word signifying pool of the moor, in allusion to the ancient state of the low part of the parish which, though now highly cultivated and very fertile, bears abundant traces of its once having been covered with water. Its greatest length is about six miles and a half, and its utmost breadth about three miles. It is bounded on the north by the Frith of Forth, on the East partly by the River Avon which separates the county of Stirling from the County of Linlithgow and partly by the parish of Muiravonside, on the South by Muiravonside and Slamanan parishes, and on the West by the parish of Falkirk. As the parish is but of recent formation, it affords few materials for history. It was disjoined from that of Falkirk in 1724. Its name, however, must be at least of long standing for among the titles of the |

A monument which was erected in the year 1810 by the inhabitants of Wallacestone (then called Redding Red Muir) to the memory of that celebrated hero, Sir William Wallace, but previous to its erection there lay on the Same Spot the remains of a Stone which was Said to have been carried by Wallace from the Stream which divides Polmont from Muiravonside, to a gentle eminence about 1½ mile to the South of the village of Redding, and upon which he Stood and witnessed the first battle of Falkirk in 1298 against Edward of England. The initials W.W. have been traced out on the stone by various people yet alive in the district, but the general opinion is that they were by far too modern for the period in which this event took place.

A considerable Stream which is formed by the combined waters of West Quarter Burn & Polmont Burn near Beancross, and after a sluggish course of about 2 miles flows into the River Carron. The principal part of this stream has been diverted from its original course to make room for the construction of the Canal and Docks at Grangemouth, its original course was very sinous, but the artificial channel through which it now runs is nearly straight. It formed the boundary between the parishes of Polmont & Falkirk previous to its waters being directed through a new channel, its old course is now taken for the boundary. |

This was the country seat of an Abbot around which there was a rampart and a ditch, and at the South east corner there was a draw-bridge, but all that now remains is the site of the foregoing surrounded with forest trees. There is nothing left of the building. Mr. Nimmo in his history of Stirlingshire volume 1, page 157 says "The Abbey of Newbattle had considerable possessions in Stirlingshire. David I made a donation to that monastery of a Salt-pan upon the lands of Callanter, with the privilege of fuel and common pasture in the wood of that name. The palace where the Salt-pan was situated still goes by the name of Salt-Pow[drake]. Adam de Morcham, who appears to have had a large estate in these parts, granted the same |

So called from having been constructed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. "The wall or rampart extended from Caeridden on the Firth of Forth to Dunglass on the Clyde, and is 36 miles 620 yards long. This rampart, which was of earth, and rested on a stone foundation, was upwards of 20 feet high, and 24 feet thick. Along the whole extent of the wall there was a vast ditch praetentura on the outward or N [North] side, which was generally 20 feet deep & 40 feet wide, and which, there is reason to believe, might be filled with water when occasion required. This ditch & rampart were strengthened at both ends and throughout its whole extent, by one and twenty forts, there being at each extremity, and the remainder placed between, at the distance of 3554½ yards or something more than 2 English miles from one another, and it has been clearly ascertained that these stations were designedly placed on the previous fortifications of Agricola. Its necessary appendage, a military road, ran behind the rampart from end to end, for the use of the troops, and for keeping up the usual communication between the stations or forts. From inscriptions on some of the foundation stones which have been dug up, it |

appears that the second legion, with detachments from the sixth and twentieth legion, and some auxiliaries, erected these vast military works, equally creditable to their skill and perseverance. This wall is called in the popular language of the country, Grime's Dyke, the etymology of which has confounded antiquarians, and puzzled philologists. In British speech, and in the Welsh language of the present day the word 'gryme' signifies strength; but whether the appellation which the wall now receives is derived from such a root seems doubtful. Certain it is, that the absurd fiction of Fordun, Boyce and Buchanan, who derive their name from a supposititious person of the name of Grime and his Scots having broke through this wall, has long been exploded."
Gazeteer of Scotland.
"With respect to the modern name, Graham's Dyke, by which it now goes, we can offer nothing with certainty. Graham is a surname very numerous and of great antiquity in Scotland. A distinct and powerful clan of that name is mentioned, as possessing a considerable territory upon the borders of the two kingdoms, as late as the days of Edward VI. All our historians mention a chief so called, who in the fifth century, broke through this wall, and made dreadful havock amongst the Britons, who were now abandoned by their friends the Romans; and as other conquerors sometimes received names from the countries they had subdued, this renowned warrior is said to have given his to a work which he destroyed. Several of these authors have handed down another transaction, which is as likely to have given a rise to the name Graham's Dyke, though we have never seen it taken notice of by antiquaries in connexion with the subject we are upon. In the reign of Malcolm 2nd, near the end of the tenth century, one Grimus, or Gryme, a relation of the royal family, aspiring to the crown, raised a considerable army to accomplish his design. Malcolm marched at the head of his troops to give him battle. The two armies encamped in view of each other upon opposite sides of the Forth, not far from Stirling. An accommodation of a very singular nature was brought about, without any bloodshed, by the influence of Fothadus, bishop of Saint Andrews, a man highly reputed in both armies, on account of his sanctity. The terms of accommadation, say our authors, were that the kingdom should be divided between Malcolm and Gryme during the life of the latter; that at his death, the whole should be possessed by Malcolm; and that the wall between the Forth and the Clyde should be the boundary of their respective dominions, Malcolm occupying what lay upon the south of that wall and Gryme the northern parts."

There are very few traces of this interesting antiquity now to be found, as time and the enterprise of the tillers of the soil have done much to obliterate it, but through the policies of Callender House and at Bantaskine it can be distinctly seen.
A description of the Roman Wall through this parish taken from General Roy's Military Antiquities of Scotland. Hence the wall, no doubt, led by the Mumrills, And having crossed Edinbelly-burn, And that of the Weddings, it hath passed along the rising grounds whereon Polmont church is situated; but in this East part of its course scarcely any traces of it are to be seen. Having then passed another small brook at Millhall, it hath mounted the bank, and kept along the heights between that place and the river Avon, where some faint appearances of the ditch may be discerned. It seems to have passed the Avon at a place called Bankhead, and then ascends to the Village of Inner Avon, where there is an Ancient tower, and where, without doubt, there must have been a Station, although now washed away by the river. The distance from the supposed position of the fort at New Merchieston to this place is 4,400 yards. In the Britannia Romana is given a very full and accurate detail of all the inscription that had then been discovered along the course of the wall; whence it appears that no more than three legions, the second, Surnamed Augusta, the Sixth, Victrix, and the twentieth, Valens Victrix, had any concern in the execution of that public work. |

A small but important River which rises near the road-side leading from Campsie to Fintry, and about midway between these two villages. from its source to within about 3 miles of Denny its banks are low, and its course sluggish, particularly that portion passing through Carron Bog, where in the winter season it not unfrequently assumes the appearance of a large Loch -from this point to about ½ mile S. [South] of Denny it is Rapid, its banks Rugged and precipitous and thickly wooded, from this point to its confluence with the
Firth of Forth it again assumes its sluggish course. Its tributaries are the Grange Burn, Bonny Water, and a number of small rivulets of lesser note. At Larbert nearly the whole of its waters are diverted through an artificial channel to a large reservoir for the purpose of propelling the vast machining of the Carron Iron Works, about ½ mile below

these Works, it again receives the water which was taken from it at Larbert, and from this point to the Firth of Forth it is navigable.
The navigable part of this River has undergone considerable change during the past century, formerly it was very crooked, overflowed its banks and left waste a considerable area of valuable land, but with a view of improving its navigation it was straitened & strong embankments erected on either side, so that the land which it once flooded and left almost useless, is now the most valuable in the locality.
This River, during its course, forms portions of the boundaries of the parishes of Fintry, Campsie, Kilsyth, St Ninians, Dunipace, Denny, Larbert, Falkirk & Bothkennar. |

"The Firth of Forth is of most importance to navigation and Commerce. Above Queensferry it is, in every part one of the safest roadsteads in Britain. Inverkeithing bay, Burntislands roads, Leith roads, Elie roads, and various other localities, are places of Safe anchorage.- On the South Side the harbours are Grangemouth, Granton, Leith, Fisherrow and Dunbar. - Granton being the best on the firth, and Leith the most frequented, and the only one of much Commercial importance. - On the north side at most of the multitudinous towns and villages which sit upon the coast, are harbours Superior, in general, to those on the South Side, but less frequented,
the one at Burntisland being the best on the firth except that of Granton. -In early times the firth was regarded as of dangerous navigation, but though Shoally in various localities, and heaved
up by Sand banks, it is now - with the appliances of light-houses on Inch Keith and May Island, and of accurately drawn, and minute charts - So Signally Safe as to be hardly ever the Scene of a Shipwreck. - The amount of trade on its waters was materially increased by the opening . Continued |

ʘ Of the Forth and Clyde Canal & has been not a little augmented by the introduction and the progressively improving application of the propelling power of Steam, Navigable to Stirling only for vessels of 80 or 100 tons, it might easily, by means of Side-locks or a deep Straight Cut along the locality of its "links", be made to carry to that town vessels of most of the classes which enter it from the Sea. - On both Shores, from Borrowstonness downwards, are numerous Salt-works : and along the coasts, as well as inland near the banks of the river, are vast repositories
of coal, limestone, and iron-stone, and these along with extensive and multitudinous fisheries attract a very numerous Sort of vessels. The firth abounds with white fish of all kinds, and is ploughed by fleets of fishing-boats, from Newhaven Fisherrow and other fishing villages, procuring Supplies for the daily markets of Edinburgh, and for the markets of other towns. - At Stirling Alloa, Kincardine and numerous other places, are valuable fisheries of salmon. An annual shoal of herring generally visits the firth, and in Some Years, has yielded prodidgous produce: but its fish are estimated contd. [continued] ʘ |

decidedly inferior in quality to those of the Western Coast of Scotland. At Cramond and Inchmickerywere formerly vast beds of oysters, but from over-fishing they have been much exhausted, and they also Yield a fish which in quality and Size is generally inferior to that obtained in manyplaces on the British coast.
The firth is often mentioned in history in Connection with invasions, with the landing of
troops or warlike muniments from foreign friendly powers, and withthe voyages on errands of State
or of matrimony of the princes and princesses of Scotland !! -

between their terminations, Combined with the danger and the tediousness of the natural navigation from Side to Side of the Country along the rough Marine highway round the Pentland Firth, Suggested, at a very early period of modern civilization, the desirableness of a Forth and Clyde Canal. - In the reign of Charles 2nd. - a project was conceived of cutting out So deep and broad a Communication as Should admit the transit of even transports and Small Ships - of - war! but it probably Shared the odium of the unpopular government which had conceived it and would, if attempted to be put in execution, have Starred upon the fragments of a prodigal and ill-directed public expenditure. - In 1768. the work was begun at the east end, under the direction of Mr. Smeaton. On the 10th of July, Sir Laurence Dundas of Kerse performed the Ceremony of making the first incision of the Ground, with a Spade which is Said to be preserved as a relic in the mansion of his descendants.

In July 1775, the Canal was fit for navigation to Stockingfield, the point whence a Side-branch was designed to lead off to Glasgow, and in 1777 the Side-branch was completed to Hamilton Hill, Still nearer that City and accom-
modated at its terminus with a basin for the reception of vessels, and granaries for the storage of foods. But difficulties had occurred on which the inexperience of the age in Canal-making had not calculated and had occasioned So great a Surplus expenditure above the
estimated Cost that the finances of the Company, Seemed to be menaced with Confusion And ruin. - All the original Stock all the Amount of a Subsequent loan, and all the proceeds of toll-dues hitherto received, were expended : And, at the Same time, the annual revenue did not much exceed £4,000. - Shares now sold at 50 per cent discount; prospects were gloomy and disastrous, and doubts arose whether the Canal would ever be carried to the Clyde. -

But in 1784 Government, out of the rents of the forfeited estates in Scotland, granted £50,000 toward the Completion of the work,
reserving a power of drawing proportional dividends with the proprietors, And allowing them,on the other hand, to add their arrears of interest to their principal Sums. - In July 1786, the Cutting of the Canal was resumed, And in July 1790 it was Completed from Sea to Sea. - Though the Canal was planned to be no more than Seven feet deep, yet, by Subsequent additions to the height of its banks, it became in effect eight feet. -The length of the work, in all its parts is 38¾ miles; of the navigation direct from the Forth to the Clyde, 35 miles; of the side-branch to Port Dundas, 2¾ miles, And of the continuation of the Monkland Canal, 1 mile.- The number of locks in the eastern Side of the island is 20 & on the western 19, the difference being occasioned by the higher level of water in the Clyde at Bowling-Bay than in Grange-burn or the Carron at Grangemouth. -
