031.05 | A large village Situated on the main road leading from Glasgow & Edinburgh. The houses are mostly one Storey & Slated. Chiefly occupied by agricultural laborers. It has a Church, Manse & two Schools together with a Post Office, three Inns and a number of shops for the Sale of the neccessiaries of life. The principal part of this village was at one time known as Bennetstown, the houses on the N. [North] Side of the road having the name of Polmont Kirk, both places are now called Polmont, Bennetstown, and Polmont Kirk having been obsolete. Near this village the junction of the Stirlingshire Midland Junction Railway with that of the Edinburgh & Glasgow occurs. |
