Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire |
|
The parish of Muiravonside is in the Presbytery of Linlithgow, Synod of Lothian & Tweeddale and in the County of Stirling.
The name is commonly pronounced and generally written in ancient records, Moranside, and is derived, doubtless, from the position of the parish on the river Avon, and its uncultivated aspect in former times. Our silver communion cups, however, probably presented to the parish by the Earl of Callendar, and Lord of Almond, are said in 1676, to belong to the church of Almond: this, together with a tradition, that the minister once lived at Almond Castle, which is not far from the church, makes it probable that the Chaplain of the castle, having assumed the spiritual superintendence of the district, got it erected into a separate parish, as it is repeatedly mentioned among the patronages of the Earls of Callendar and Linlithgow, as anciently forming part of the parish of Falkirk. The date of its disjunction is unknown. It is named as a separate parish in 1606, the date of the oldest presbytery record.

[continued from page 1]
The length of the parish is about 7 miles: its irregular breadth may average two. The river Avon descending towards the north east, till it turns to the north and west, not far from Linlithgow Bridge, bounds its extreme length on the south east, and forms the border of its breadth on the north east, separating it from the parishes of Slamannan Torphichen, Linlithgow, and Borrowstounness, till it meets with the rivulets which form its less apparent division from Polmont, and Slamannan on the north west and west. Falkirk, though 5 miles distant, is the market town for the parish, rather than Linlithgow, which is distant but 3. The church and manse were built within these 30 years and are sufficient and in good repair; but the former, being within two miles of the east end, and six of the west, is, especially in bad weather, inaccessible to many. It may accommodate 600. The glebe is worth about 12£ a year. The stipend, chiefly money, from 240£ to 260£. Statistical Account dated 1841.
The parish contains about 8015 Statute Acres. There are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

A long narrow ridge of slightly elevated land, partly arable and partly wooded. Some few years since the N.E. [North East] face of the hill bore traces of having been fortified, the land is now cultivated, and all evidences of fortification entirely removed. it has, doubtless, been the scene of a conflict, from the number of Stone Coffins found at it at the time improvements were taking place on the Edinburgh & Glasgow road, which crosses it, Stone Coffins have also been discovered in it at a more recent date, by workmen engaged in digging for gravel in the adjacent Gravel Pit. All these Coffins contained human remains.
It is on the property of William Forbes Esqr., Callander House Falkirk. |

A long narrow River which rises in the Co. [County] of Dumbarton, and after a circuitous course falls into the Firth of Forth. "The river Avon so circles round the parish as not only to give it its name, but to form on all sides, excepting the west and northwest, its boundary line; it traverses while in contact with it measured in straight lines and regular segments [a distance] of 10¼ miles, but measured along its beautifully sinuous bed, of probably 15 or 16 miles; and over most of the way it is richly curtained with wood, or traverses a romantic and lusciously featured vale or dell, or otherwise possesses features of high scenic interest." **
"The Avon and the finely wooded valley through which that romantic stream runs, is crossed by a viaduct of 20 arches, (Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway) some of them upwards of 90 feet in height, and of beautiful light masonry, from which the magnificient aqueduct, by which the Union Canal is led across the same valley, at a point a little higher up the stream is visible in its full extent." "A Splendid water-way extending from Port-Hopetown at Edinburgh to Port-Downie on the Forth and Clyde Canal, and, by means of the latter navigation, connecting Glasgow with Edinburgh, from which it is frequently termed the Edinburgh and Glasgow Canal. The success of the Forth and Clyde Canal, which extends from Port-Dundas at Glasgow, to Grangemouth at the head of the Firth of Forth, had long directed the attention of the public to the expediency of forming a canal which should take the benefit of that already in existence, and thus form a continuous means of Communication between the eastern and western Capitals of Scotland. It was commenced in 1818 and finished in 1822. The total cost up till this time" (1842) "was little short of £400,000, an amount vastly beyond the original sum at which the works had been estimated, and to this Cause in addition to the misconception, as to the amount of traffic likely to be on it, may be attributed the extremely unremunerating character which has all along attached to this really useful and great national undertaking. The line as has been stated commences at the

X Port-Hopetoun basin at Edinburgh and extends to Port-Downie near Falkirk, where it joins the Forth and Clyde Canal, by which the communication is carried on to Glasgow. From Port-Hopetoun to Port-Downie, the distance is 31½ miles the length being caused by sinuosities in the line which were adopted to retain the level and avoid the additional expense and delay at lockage. It passes westwards through part of the Counties of Edinburgh, Linlithgow and Stirling, embracing the beautiful and populous Country in its route as well as the towns of Linlithgow and Falkirk. The parishes in the County of Edinburgh, through which the line is carried, are St. Cuthbert, Colinton, Currie, Ratho, and part of Kirkliston; in Linlithgow Shire, those of Uphall, part of Kirkliston, Dalmeny, Abercorn and Linlithgow; and in Stirlingshire those of Muiravonside, Polmont and Falkirk. For about 10 miles from Edinburgh the course of the line is westerly, but then it makes a long sweep to the north after which its direction again changes, and it makes a varied, though, in general, a north-west course, till it termination

* passing Falkirk on the south Near Slateford it is carried over a ravine and the water of Leith by a bridge 65 feet in height and 500 feet in length. It is swept over the valley of the Avon, a little above Linlithgow, by an aqueduct of still more stupendous proportions, which is beautiful and imposing as a work of art, and is seen to great advantage from miles distant, as well as from the line of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, which is carried by a splendid viaduct over the same valley.
For 30 miles from Port-Hopetoun, the Canal is carried on the level, and the remainder and very short distance till its junction with the Forth and Clyde is occupied by 11 locks, each 10 feet in depth so that the Union at the head of the locks, is 110 feet above the level of the Forth and Clyde Canal adjoining. It is 40 feet broad at the top of the water-way 20 at the bottom and is 5 in depth throughout. The line for 10 miles west from Edinburgh was opened on the 22nd March 1822, and throughout its entire length early in May thereafter. The estimated cost of the construction was set down by the engineers at £235,167, the actual expense for necessary outlay, in addition to the loss of interest on outlaid money, had advanced within four years of its opening to £600,000. Another is, that while the estimated annual revenue, was calculated at £55,000, the real return, within Seven Years, after the opening of the Canal did not amount to £17,000 per annum." The foregoing is extracted from the Gazetteer of Scotland. |

This ancient building is supposed to have been built about the beginning of the 15th Century. It is situate about ¼ mile north-west from the parish Church, and close to the boundary of Almond Wood. It has never been of any great size, but its walls have certainly been of an immense strength. About the year 1700 or 1712 a lady who lived in the neighbourhood caused an additional part to be built to it, which now forms the front & a part of the northern and southern gables. After it was metamorphosed in accordance with her taste & style, she made it her place of abode, where she resided till about the middle of the 17th century. The result of the change yet stands, though in a roofless and more ruinous condition than the original building The part which represents an oblong square of about 30 x 40 feet is the original portion, and though the other part is of a much more recent erection, the original is witnessing its gradual downfall, and at no distant period it will once more stand apparently (to the external view) in the same condition as when its castellated walls served as a house of refuge to Mary Queen of Scots.

X While it was in use, it was encompassed by a moat about 16 feet wide, over which there was a draw-bridge and on the site of the latter there has been a stone bridge of one arch built, perchance for the purpose of satisfying the curiosity of the antiquarian.
The following is extracted from the Statistical Acct. [Account] "The history of Almond Castle is obscure. It was anciently known by the name of Haining or more rarely Manuel and seems to have owed its origin to the Crawfords of Haining a family of note in the reign of James III one of whom was Abbot of Holyrood and Treasurer of Scotland under that Sovereign. The stag's head and antlers which formed the Crest of their Armorial bearings show their descent from that Crawfurd who rescued King David from the deer on the spot where Holyrood now stands. This much is certain from the retour of Agnes Crawford whose marriage in 1540 transferred the Castle to the family of Livingstone,

In that family it continued till, in 1633, the name of Almond was given to it, and Sir James Livingstone, second son of the first Earl of Linlithgow, was created a baron by that title. About the middle of the last Century it ceased to be inhabited, and still remains a fine specimen of the strength and durability of the materials, and masonry of ancient times." |

"The Nunnery of Emanuel or Manuel was situated in the south-east border of Stirlingshire, upon the north bank of the Avon, a mile above Linlithgow Bridge. The walls of the chapel, which are of hewn stone, are still to be seen; as also the burial place, part of which is washed away by the river. It was founded by Malcolm IV, surnamed the Maiden, in 1156 and consecrated to the Virgin Mary. It was possessed by nuns of the Bernardine or Cistertian order, who occupied thirteen convents in Scotland. Beside the endowment bestowed by the royal founder, it received considerable donations from others at different times. King William, Malcolm's successor, made a grant of a tenth of all his revenues in the shire and borough of Linlithgow both money and victual. Alexander II made a donation of the mills of Linlithgow, with all their sequels and pertinents; and Roger de Avenel bestowed upon the holy sisters a chalder of wheat, to be paid by him, and his heirs out of his barns at Abercorn, at Christmas, yearly. **** When the list of ecclesiastical revenues was drawn up in in 1562, those of Manuel amounted to two pounds, fourteen shillings, eightpence Scots; three chalders of bear, seven chalders of meal, with a large quantity of salmon. It was given after the Reformation to the family of Callander." (Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire) Not a vestige of this building now remains to indicate the spot where it stood. the site of it is on the property of William Forbes Esqr., Callender House, Falkirk. It is generally called Manuel Priory in the neighbourhood. |

A small elliptical hill, one of a series of fortified eminences said to have formerly existed in this locality. on the summit of this hill are three very plainly marked platforms with steep slopes, forming a semi ellipsis, and evidently artificial. but there are no existing remains to indicate that a Castle or any other building has stood here. Stone Coffins, in the Statistical Account of the parish, are said to have been found here, but no information can be obtained to confirm this statement, and from the appearance of the hill it is very doubtful if any excavation sufficiently deep for the discovery of such has been made on it since the fortifications were constructed. |

The site of this Fort is situated on a small, wooded elevation the N.E [North East] face of which is very steep, this Fort formed one of a series of fortified eminences said to have existed, at some unknown period, along the banks of the River Avon, but no trace of the works are now to be seen.
The works of this Fort would appear to have been constructed of Stone, the present tenant of Avonbank having destroyed it about 15 years since for the purpose of obtaining material, in the shape of stone, to erect outhouses, and from which he obtained an ample supply.
This eminence is probably the Harelaw spoken of in the Statistical Account. but it is not recognised by any name in the locality, neither is it known where Harelaw is. |
