The parish of Logie is in the Presbystery of Dunblane, Synod of Perth and Stirling.
The name Logie is of very common occurrence in Scotland. It is said to be derived from the Gaelic Lag or Laggie, signifying low or flat ground. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Dunblane; on the south, by the river Forth, which divides it (principaly) from the parishes of Stirling and St. Ninians; on the west, by Lecropt and Dunblane; and on the east, by Alva and Alloa.
There are 5 villages in the parish of Logie, viz, Menstrie, Blair Logie, Craigmill, Causewayhead and Bridge of Allan.
There is no market town in the parish, the nearest is Stirling, which adjoins the southern boundary of the parish, and Alloa, about three miles from its eastern extremity.

[continued from page 1]
The parish of Logie is whole and entire, but it is divided into 6 separate parts by the boundaries of the counties of Stirling, Perth, and Clackmannan. Of these 6 portions, one is in the County of Perth; two separate portions are in the County of Stirling; and three separate portions are in the County of Clackmannan as described in the name books for the portions of this parish in the respective Counties.
Of the two separate portions which are in the County of Stirling, the greater part forms a portion of the main body of the County and it joins the parishes of Stirling, St. Ninians, Lecropt, and part of the parish of Dunblane. The other portion forms a detached part No. 1 of the County of Stirling and it joins the parish boundary of Dunblane.
There are no detached portions of this parish, and there are no detached portions of any other parish situated within it.
The first of the above two described portions of this parish, that are in the County of Stirling contains 2183 Statute Acres. The other portion of Logie parish which forms a detached part of the County of Stirling will be found also in this Name Book; it contains __ Statute acres and is situated in that part of Logie parish which is in the County of Perth. |

The above corrections have been made since this Name Book was received from Southampton on the 16th May 1862 as it was considered desirable to keep the separate portions of Logie Parish which belong to the Counties of Perth, Stirling, and Clackmannan in a Separate
Name Book for each County.
The parish Church is on plan 133/9 Logie in Perthshire -

A one storey structure, erected in 1821. In this house is the shaft up which the mineral water is conveyed by means of forcing pumps. The house consists of two compartments, viz - the pump room & sale room.
"The mineral spring now so celebrated, and so much resorted to by invalids, rises on the state of Airthrey, on the high grounds above the village of Bridge of Allan. It was discovered in the course of working the Airthrey copper mine, from the sole of which it springs".
Statistical Acct. [Account] of Parish.
"The mineral springs of Airthrey, though but recently applied to practical utility, had been known to exist from a remote period. The working of a copper mine on the Airthrey estate led to the discovery." *** "Of the many shafts which had doubtless been sunk since the Commencement of mining operations at Airthrey, only three are now visible. The first of these is opposite the Bath House; the second is now used from drawing up the water into the Well House; and the third is situated in the plantation, on the sloping bank, about three or four hundred yards"

"yards towards the north of the Well House. This las excavation consists of a drift slanting into the rock for several yards, till it takes a somewhat perpendicular descent, evidently communicating with the other shafts by the level drift beneath" ***
"Of the four springs which proceed from the eastern wall of the mine, three are collected in a cistern, about 300 yards from the bottom of the shaft, and from thence conducted, into the earthen pipes, to another cistern immediately under the shaft, from which the water is conveyed, by forcing pumps, up the shaft into the Well House. The shaft, which is thirty fathoms deep, is provided with a series of ladders, fastened on platforms, at safe distances, by means of which the mine may be explored." ***
"The temperature of the water in the collecting cistern is 49° Fahrenheit at 9.a.m., and the quantity of water flowing into it about 1000 gallons per day - a supply sufficient to meet the wants of a very large number of visitors. |

A celebrated watering place, which has, within the last twenty years, from the reputed efficacy of its mineral waters, sprung up from a small retired hamlet into a large and beautiful village. "In its present form, Bridge of Allan is essentially modern; for although, beyond the period of human recollection, a hamlet existed on the spot, this cannot be regarded as the embryo of the present village. *** To the discovery of the adjacent mineral springs of Airthrey, Bridge of Allan is primarily indebted for its rapid transmutation, from the

the sequestered retreat of rural life to the favoured resort of elegance and fashion. The first house in the modern village was erected so lately as 1837; but such has been the rapidity with which houses and villas have since sprung up at this rising Spa, that the Visitor could scarcely credit the recentness of its origin. Handsome and commodious houses are annually reared, which from the liberal terms on which portions of ground for villas may be obtained in feu, and the inexhaustible supply of building materials that at very reasonable cost may be obtained in the immediate neighbourhood, are found to yield highly advantageous returns. Such is the demand for house-accommodation, that no sooner is the building of a new structure commenced, than offers are made to take it in lease, at least as a summer residence, on the fabric being finished."
"The village derives its name from the bridge across the river Allan, which bounds it on the west." *** "The few houses comprising the original village are situated nearest the bridge." *** "The main portion of the new village extends eastwards of the older hamlet on the level Carse, and immediately along the foot of the table-land on the north, on which the Mansion-house and grounds of Westerton are situated."

A mountain range extending in a north-easterly direction from Bridge of Allan to Abernethy on the river Tay about twentyfour miles in length. The small portion of the range of the Ochils in the Stirlingshire part of this parish is not prominent. The highest point (White Hill) being about 400f [feet] above the level of the sea. The southeastern side of this chain of hills is steep and precipitous throughout its whole length; to the north-west it falls off with a gentle slope.
From the Forth to the foot of the Ochil hills, the country is a dead level, of rich and highly cultivated carse ground, presenting a remarkable and pleasing contrast with this bold and almost perpendicular range of hills, rising suddenly from the plain to the height of 2500 feet. In the parish of Logie, the Ochils are almost entirely destitute of wood, except in the immediate vicinity of Airthrey Castle; but their lofty and precipitous front, stretching in one long unbroken chain from west to east, clothed with rich pasture interrupted by rugged precipices and bare rocks, presents to the eye one of the most picturesque and beautiful mountain ranges to be found in Scotland. The most remarkable peak in this parish is Demyat, well known to the tourist as commanding one of the most extensive and finely diversified views in the kingdom. From its summit, the Forth, the chief of Scottish rivers, may be traced almost from its source in Loch Ard, as far as the German Ocean. Edinburgh is distinctly seen, and it is even said that the coast of Ireland is sometimes visible. The well known windings of the Forth, and the more humble, but hardly less picturesque meanderings of the Devon, "Stirling's ancient tower and town", the ruins of Cambuskenneth Abbey, and the beautiful domain of Airthrey Castle, form the most striking objects in the immediate foreground, while the view on the north and west, bounded by the lofty summits of the Grampians, extends on the south as far as the hills of Peebles-shire.

[Below entry for Cornton (Site of the Battle of Stirling A.D. 1297):]
The battle of Stirling was fought on the 13th September 1297. The scene of Action appears to have been about the place now called Corntown, and in a plain north of the river, opposite to the castle. It was the most complete victory that Wallace had ever gained in a regular fought field. Nor was his loss considerable. Sir Andrew Moray of Bothwell was the only person of note amongst the slain. The Earl of Surry, who, with the rest of the English army, was upon the south side of the River, beholding this disaster, immediately retreated southward, after having set fire to the remains of the bridge, to prevent a quick pursuit from the victorious Scots. He was greatly harassed, however, in his march by the Lord High Steward, and the Earl of Lennox, who came upon him from behind the neighbouring mountains, where, with a large force, they had been posted in Ambush. Wallace, too, having speedily crossed soon joined them; and coming up with the main body of the retreating army at Torwood, commenced a sharp action. The Scots obtained the victory; and Surry himself escaped with great difficulty, being so closely pursued, that when he arrived at Berwick, his horse was so fatigued as to be unable to eat.

A large river which takes its rise from a spring in the north side of Benlomond, and, running from west to east, forms that firth, or arm of the German ocean, to which it gives its name. Its principal tributaries are, the Goodie, Teath, and Allan on the north; on the south the only stream of any size entering it is the Bannock Burn. It forms the southern boundary of the parish, during which its banks are low & has a muddy bed. |

The site of a wooden bridge which tradition says was over the Forth, and which was destroyed by Wallace in 1297.
There are no remains at present to indicate where it crossed the river but a ford, which is only about two feet deep at low water, is generally supposed to be the place.
"Part of the English army had crossed the bridge, which was of wood, and so narrow, as to admit of only two men abreast, when they were attacked and routed by the Scots.
It has been questioned whether the bridge was broken down by accident or design, or, indeed, if it was broken down at all." Statistical Account.
"The bridge across the Forth was then of timber *** Though this bridge was so narrow that only two persons abreast could pass it; the English Generals proposed to transport along it their numerous army."
