The parish of Kippen is in the Presbytery of Dunblane, Synod of Perth and Stirling. Of the two portions of the parish that are in the county of Stirling, one is in the extreme West of the parish joining the parishes of Balfron, Drymen and Port of Menteith and contains 3203 statute Acres; the other portion is in the extreme east of the parish, joining the parishes of Balfron, Gargunnock, Kilmadock, Kincardine (detached,) and Port of Menteith, and contains 3162 Statute acres. In this last portion (extending northwards from the junction of the parishes of Balfron, and Gargunnock) lye a detached part of the county of Perth containing 646 Statute acres; the other portion of the parish which is in the County of Perth extends from north to south through the centre of the parish forming part of the main body of the County. word signifying a promontory; and it is supposed to be descriptive of the situation of the Village. The late Mr. James Miller, preacher of the Gospel, Edinburgh, who was a native of this parish. He mortified a sum of money, the interest of which is to be paid as a bursary to two students during their attendance, respectively, at the classes of Greek, logic, moral and natural philosophy, in the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The amount of the bursary is, £24 to the former, and nearly the same sum to the latter. The Kirk Session of Kippen are the patrons, and the election is directed to be made on his father's grave stone, in the Church yard of Kippen.
The nearest market town is Stirling which is about 10 miles distant. There are two villages in the parish, namely Kippen and Buchlyvie. The parish Church is not inconveniently situated, in respect of the bulk of the population connected with it. It was built in 1825, and is in a good state of repair. It affords accommodation for 800 sitters. The Manse was built in 1706, and was completely repaired, and received a large addition in 1814; and it is now a commodious dwelling. The glebe is four acres Scotch in extent, and may be worth about 12 pounds. The stipend consists of 16 chalders, half meal and half barley, with £10 for communion elements. In 1835, a new church was built at Buchlyvie, in connection with the Church of Scotland which contains 350 sittings; to which a district of this parish, containing 700 inhabitants, and a district of Drymen parish containing 400 have been assigned; and it is now ecclesiastically erected into the parish of Buchlyvie; the minister of which is paid from the seat rents and the collections at the church doors, and receives £70 yearly, besides a small sum for communion elements.
There are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

The site of this building is on a small eminence now wooded, and was the family mansion of the Stirlings of Garden. the date of its erection and destruction is not known. Nimmo, in his history of Stirlingshire, in recounting some of the predatory movements of Rob Roy makes mention of this building as follows, "Mr. Stirling of Garden's paternal grandfather, had, with his lady, gone, about 1710, on a visit from Garden Castle, which stood on an eminence forming an island in what was once a lake, but now is a fertile meadow. On their return they found the fortalice occupied by a party under Robert Roy MacGregor, and the draw-bridge up."
It is generally asserted that the term Tower and not Castle, was applied to this building, the Knoll on which it stood does not admit of a very extensive ground work, it has been probably of unusual height for a family mansion which has given to it the term of Tower. |

The name Kippen is said to be derived from a Gaelic word signifying a promontory; and is thought to be descriptive of the situation of the Village, which stands on the top of an eminence in the Eastern part of the parish. Its situation is healthy, & the view from the top of the village is very fine, embracing the whole of the Strath of Monteith and a large part of the Kerse of Stirling, and the view is only bounded by the distant range of the Ochills and the Grampians. It consists of one and two storey houses partly thatched, but chiefly slated and in tolerable repair, with the exception of those that are in ruins, which are rather numerous, and give the village a desolate appearance. The inhabitants are chiefly laboring people, with a sprinkling of small Shopkeepers and Artisans. The village contains a Parish Church & Free Church with their respective manses,

An eminence covered with mixed wood on the banks of a small burn that empties itself into the Broich Burn It is one of those ancient Caledonian fortifications very common in the parish but about which very little is known except the name; it is supposed by some partes that they were used as beacons. Mr. Ewin of Arngomery the proprietor says that he set several men to work to dig up this Kier, but after digging a little below the surface the men said there was such a smell that they could not stand it, and nothing would induce them to renew their labors. No coins, arms, or relics of any description have even been found in any of those Kiers , and this is easily accounted for by the fact, that they have never been sought for. |

From the Statistical Account of Kippen. "There are several small heights in the parish to which the
name Keir is applied, which bears the marks of some ancient military works, such as Keir of Glentirran,
Keir Hill of Dasher; Keir Brae of Drum; Keir Knowe of Arnmore; Keir Brae of Garden; Various
opinions have been entertained concerning the origin and use of these works; but no satisfactory account
can be given of them." These Keirs or Fortifications appear to have been scattered all over this
part of the country as similar names appear in the parish of Gargunnock (see extract below) and
as no remains of these fortifications can now be discovered on many of them, it is considered sufficient to write the names in
Stump to the Hills so that the names will be retained.
Statistical Account of Gargunnock Parish. "The Keir Hill was a fortified place, in the end of the 13th Century. It
is considerably elevated, and is of an oval figure, and has been surrounded by a rampart; it is near the
confluence of two rivulets which unite at the east end of the village; and there must have been a ditch to the south.
The Peel of Gargunnock has been a much larger fortification than the Keir Hill. It was situated on a rising ground
about 50 yards from the Forth, and about 50 or 60 yards east from the mouth of the burn of Gargunnock. It was surrounded
by a rampart and a ditch. Part of the ditch is still visible on the south, where it communicates with the burn. There is not
a vestige of the Peel now remaining; the plough passes over the place where it once stood; and the Site must be
pointed out to the inquiring stranger. The use of the Peel is supposed to have been for the protection of a ford,

A wooded eminence supposed to have been a fortification made by the Caledonians. It is situated on the west bank of the Cuthbertston Burn, at the point where it emerges from the high ground into the plain below, the hill is of considerable elevation perhaps 200 feet, and flat & circular on the top, & would command an extensive view to the North East and West, but for its woody character. On this hill too it is supposed the Old Church stood, which was dedicated to St Mauvais, who is the tutelary Saint of this Parish, and the hill is frequently called the Kirk Hill on this account, but there are no records of this being the case it is merely Traditional. A little to the S.E. [South East] of Kier Hill there was formerly a well dedicated to St Mauvais but it has been covered up & its water supply a cattle trough a little lower down. |

formed in the Forth by the influx of the burn. There was also a small fortress up the river for the defence of
the Ford of Frew. There is an account of the Peel of Gargunnock, in the history of Sir William Wallace
This patriotic and brave man and his followers were in possession of the Keir Hill, from whence they sallied forth
and attacked, and put to flight the English, who were stationed in the Peel. |

This stream which forms the Boundary between the Parishes of Kippen and Gargunnock, descending from the Rock of Ballochlearn, meets with the red sandstone, through which it has opened a passage and wrought its soft materials into a number of curious shapes, similar to the wells and caldrons of the Devon; after running through a wild and well wooded glen it empties itself into the Forth at the Brisge of Frew. There are three mineral springs close to this Burn a short distance East of the Kippen Railway Station, two of them on the Kippen side and one on the Gargunnock side; they are similar in their medicinal properties to the waters of Airthrey. The springs were

much used 40 or 50 years ago by the inhabitants of Kippen but have now fallen into disuse, owing to the water from the Burn diluting them so much that they lost their medicinal virtues, and it is only within the last few years that their position was again discovered. Some slight attempt is now being made to protect them from the water of the Stream by placing pipes of Stoneware over them, which has been attended with success, and there is no doubt that if a little energy was exercised by the proprietor they would form a formidable Rival to the Airthrey Wells. |

A remarkable isolated rock on a small stream near the farm of Limpithill. It is about 12 feet high on the one side and about 20 feet on the other. It has evidently been formed by the action of water. Tradition states that it received its name from the circumstance of a man of the name of Dugald having found shelter there on several occasions from his persecutors during the disturbed times of the Seventeenth Century. |

A Fir Plantation situated on the side of a hill adjoining the Boquhan pleasure grounds it takes its name from a large trough that used to be in it when the Stirling and Dumbarton Road ran through it. It is the property of H. F. Campbell Esqr. of Boquhan. |

This River which forms the northern Boundary of this Parish takes its rise near the Summit of Ben Lomond. It is of little importance in this parish its chief use being to float away the moss by which it is almost choked in places, from the efforts of the proprietors along its banks to improve their Estates. It is crossed by one Bridge. |

Statistical Account |
016.02 |
A small eminence in the pleasure grounds of Boquhan, and on the banks of the Boquhan Burn. It is flat on top and evidently artificial. I can get no information either traditional or historical respecting its original use; the latest account is that General Campbell, the father of the present proprietor, was in the habit of getting his tenents together for a grand field day, when they would display their valour in attacking and defending this impregnable fortress But the most interesting attack was on the beef and beer after their hard fighting was over. |

This name applies to a rocky eminence in the Pleasure Grounds of Boquhan. It is supposed to have been a similar work to the Keir Hills which occur so frequently in this Parish. It is evidently partly of artificial formation, the top being flat and a bank of earth round it but on the north side it is naturally of a rocky formation. There is no tradition connected with it. |

An insignificant stream which rises near to the Farmsteading of Dighty, and after a course of about two miles it empties itself into the Forth. There is a remarkable waterfall on it called Leckie's Loup. To a short distance below this point the banks are in many places high and rugged, and the bed rocky; But their character changes upon entering the Carse below where its course is through a level, alluvial country. |

A waterfall of about 25 feet high on the Boquhan Burn. At this place the stream narrows to about three feet and rushes over a rock into a deep pool below. After a fall of rain it has an awful and grand appearance and the noise it makes is heard at Boquhan House |
