The site of this building is on a small eminence now wooded, and was the family mansion of the Stirlings of Garden. the date of its erection and destruction is not known. Nimmo, in his history of Stirlingshire, in recounting some of the predatory movements of Rob Roy makes mention of this building as follows, "Mr. Stirling of Garden's paternal grandfather, had, with his lady, gone, about 1710, on a visit from Garden Castle, which stood on an eminence forming an island in what was once a lake, but now is a fertile meadow. On their return they found the fortalice occupied by a party under Robert Roy MacGregor, and the draw-bridge up." It is generally asserted that the term Tower and not Castle, was applied to this building, the Knoll on which it stood does not admit of a very extensive ground work, it has been probably of unusual height for a family mansion which has given to it the term of Tower. |
