009.13 | The name Kippen is said to be derived from a Gaelic word signifying a promontory; and is thought to be descriptive of the situation of the Village, which stands on the top of an eminence in the Eastern part of the parish. Its situation is healthy, & the view from the top of the village is very fine, embracing the whole of the Strath of Monteith and a large part of the Kerse of Stirling, and the view is only bounded by the distant range of the Ochills and the Grampians. It consists of one and two storey houses partly thatched, but chiefly slated and in tolerable repair, with the exception of those that are in ruins, which are rather numerous, and give the village a desolate appearance. The inhabitants are chiefly laboring people, with a sprinkling of small Shopkeepers and Artisans.
