A parish in Stirlingshire bounded on the East by the Parish of Denny, on the South by the "River Kelvin" & "Bonny Water," which seperate it from "Cumbernauld" and "Kirkintilloch," and on the North by the "Carron Water," which seperates it from the Parish of St Ninians, The Northern part of the parish is hilly and pastoral, and the Southern is rich, flat, agricultural land, The "Kilsyth Hills," which rise to a height of 1300 feet above the Level of the Sea, intersect the parish from West to East,. The principal river in the parish is the "Carron Water" which bounds the North. The "River Kelvin" and "Bonny Water," both of which rise near the same place, near the South East end of the parish, are here in Considerable streams, The only line of Turnpike Road is that going from Glasgow to Edinburgh, The principal mansion house is "Colzium House" the seat of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, of Duntreath, Bart. [Baronet] In the village there are

an established Church, a Free Church, a U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church, and a Wesleyan Methodist, and Independent Chapels and at "Low Banton" there is a Chapel of Ease. Of Schools there are five in the Parish, three in the village viz. a Parish and Free Schools and a School for females, one at "Chapelgreen" and one at "Low Banton". There are several mills and factories, viz. A mill at "Queenzieburn" and another at "Craighead" which has been used for various purposes, A Corn Mill on "Garrel Burn" and another at "Auchincloch" where there is also a Charcoal Mill, At "Dovecotwood" the manufacture of Prolygneous Acid and Dye stuffs is carried on, where also Coke is made to a considerable extent, At "Low Banton" there is a Powerloom Factory employing 80 women weaving Lappet, and in Kilsyth village there are two Handloom Factories for the same purpose, There is a Sickle Mill at Banton where numbers of reaping hooks are made. The cultivated part of the Parish is abundant in Ironstone & Coal but they have not been wrought to any extent till recently, Limestone is now only wrought at "Westside", The glen through which the "Garrel Burn" runs affords excellent freestone, Whinstone is quarried at "Auchinstarry". Near Colzium there is a large Reservoir to supply the "Forth & Clyde Canal" with water and another in the bosom of the "Kilsyth Hills",. There are numerous remains of antiquity in this Parish. A considerable remnant of the strong "Castle of Colzium" still remains near "Colzium House" and near "Dovecotwood" is some fallen masonry indicating the spot where "Kilsyth Castle" stood, which was destroyed by Cromwell on his passage to Stirling, In the village is the "Mansion House" occupied by the Viscounts Kilsyth from the Restoration of Charles 2nd to the Rebellion of 1715, The Site of another Mansion House of the Livingstone family

is still pointed out at Old Place and the "Gallow Hill," an eminence not far distant, is shown as the spot where they caused offenders against the laws to be executed, Another eminence on the Barr Wood called the Court Hill is still known as the place where they held their courts. The house where Cromwell slept on his passage to Stirling is still to be seen at Arnbrae. The vault in the Churchyard is of great age but the principal cause of its celebrity is its containing the embalmed remains of Viscountess Dundee. The Battle betwixt the Royalists and Covenanters, fought in 1645, and at which the latter were so signally defeated, was fought where the Reservoir now is, and, the Encampment of the Marquis of Montrose, though now scarcely to be seen is still pointed out on the rising ground above "Colzium House. There are several Springs of pure water in the Parish but the only one known to be celebrated in Ancient times is "St. Ninians," near "Brockieside" The most perfect remnant of antiquity in the Parish is a Pictish Fort at Balcastle of nearly Circular shape which remains in an excellent state of preservation,. The Cave on the East side of the "Garrel Burn", and used by the covenanters as a place of concealment and bearing date 1669, is still in a tolerably good Condition.
There is no portion of this parish detached; nor any portion of any other parish contained within the proper boundary of this parish. |

"A river in Stirlingshire rising from the "Campsie Hills" and flows to the East to the Upper part of the South bank of the Firth of Forth. In its course it turns several mills, waters several bleachfields, and supplies Carron Iron Works with water, The thriving Seaport of Grangemouth lies on its Southern bank near its embochure where the small river Grange and the Forth and Clyde Canal drop into it, It runs altogether about 14 miles and the country through which it passes is flat."

The site of this castle is in a commanding situation on an elevation overlooking the village, and commands a view of the surrounding country for many miles. The only part which remains is a small piece of the foundation, about 6 feet long and 1½ in height, the part shown at the South of the Castle, There are two huge masses of masonry firmly cemented together lying on the site of the Castle which have lain since it was destroyed . The date of the building of the Castle cannot be ascertained and very little is known of it till the middle of the 17th Century when it was occupied by Sir William Livingstone, afterwards Lord Kilsyth, who offered to hold it out against the Protector, but it does not appear that any resistance was made when Cromwell on his passage to Stirling completely destroyed it and left it in much the same state as it appears at the present day. When the Castle was destroyed the "Mansion House" in the village of Kilsyth was built.
"The Castle of Kilsyth is said to have been held by the English in the time of Wallace. From an early period it must have been surrounded by its dependent village."

A strong spring of delicious water on the farm of Brockieside which in Catholic times was dedicated to St Mirron, It sends from it a very strong stream of water which was purchased by the Canal Company from the Partick Baking company to help to supply their Reservoir, Near to it is a stone erected by the Partick Baking Company in 1687 and bearing a very legible date, The right of the water was bought by that Company at a very early period and taken by means of the artificial cut, now existing, to the Garrel Burn to increase the Water of the Kelvin which river drove their mills. The Statistical Account when describing this Well has fallen into an error by stating it to be south of "Wood end", when it is fully a mile North of it, |

This Cave now is not altogether complete, the quarrymen while quarrying the rock destroyed a great portion of it, It was never wholly covered over the top, but the rocks slightly overhang it. The rock at that part will reach about 20 feet in height and the cave is capable of holding 50 people, The high sunk wall in front and the seat are of recent construction, Immediately above the seat is the date 1669 in a very legible character, It is generally denominated by the common people "The Chapel" as the Covenanters are supposed to have used it as a place of worship as well as of concealment. |

This, on the authorities, named was a Castle or Mansion House of the family of Livingstone, Alexander Paterson, whose ancestors have been in the district for three centuries, states that his grandfather who died 50 years ago at the age of 80, recollected, when a boy, the house standing in a ruinous condition. It had been handed down to him through his father that it was the residence of the Livingstones during the Feudal age, The Baron dispensed justice in "Old Place" and the criminals when sentenced were marched to the "Gallow Hill" where a gallows was erected to execute them. No mention is made of it in any Accounts of the parish, though the "Gallow Hill" is spoken of in the Old Statistical Account as the place where the "Barons' unrelenting sentences were Carried into execution". The houses beside it are well known by the name of Old Place, and the spot behind it, where the Orchard was, is still pointed out. Sir Archibald Edmonstone considers this tradition correct, and wishes the name to appear on the plan. |

"There are remains of two Pictish Forts in this parish, corresponding to the two more conspicuous Roman Forts at Westerwood and Bar-hill, viz. Conneypark* and Balcastle; the latter very distinct and interesting, being one of the most regular of such forts in Scotland, and rising regularly on all sides at an angle of 45 degrees New Statistical Account.
This "Fort" is situated a little to the South of "Balcastle" and is, in every respect, perfectly entire. It is nearly of a circular shape, its greatest diameter being 120 feet and its smallest 100, Its South side is the strongest, being naturally defended by a very steep slope, improved by the hands of those who erected it, On the North and West sides it is altogether artificial and rises about 20 feet above the Surface of the ground, The top is perfectly flat and level, and is covered with corn, that part being arable, Its south side is covered with Broom and a few trees. It has never been tampered with by the farmers and is consequently in a complete state of preservation. It is believed to have been erected by the Picts but its origin is wrapt in obscurity. |

This name applies to a farmhouse as well as to the small hamlet mentioned above, all the property of Sir Archibald Edmonstone Bart. [Baronet] The house, which is the only old one in the place, where Cromwell slept, is shown on the trace by being crossed, The table which he used, which was a rough deal table, was removed from the farmhouse, by one of the former Factor's for the Estate, several years ago, |

"The original village ran along the Garrel at a time, of course, when that stream was not diverted towards its present reservoir receptacle, and it then bore the name of Monaebrugh. But about the year 1665 an entirely new town was built on a small rising ground called the Moat Hill, and took the name Kilsyth from the title of the proprietor, - Fairs are held in March, May, August, and November, - Kilsyth is a Burgh of Barony erected by a Charter from George IV. dated 7th August 1826," Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland.
The village of Kilsyth covers an area of about 100 Acres, and is cheifly occupied by handloom weavers, The oldest portion of the Village is very irregularly built, The South West part having been built about 30 years ago is more regular. Those parts are generally known as the Old and New Town to distinguish them from each other, There are other parts of the village known by seperate names, but such names not being proper are not recomended to be adopted, as the whole is known under the name of the village, There is only one Street corner ticketed (Charles Street) Those given on the trace are well known and recognised by all, The whole village is lighted with gas, It contains a Parish Church, a Free Church, a U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church, an Independent

This house on the authority of Sir A. Edmonstone Bart [Baronet] was built by William Livingstone, 1st Viscount Kilsyth, about the time of the Restoration of Charles 2nd (1660) and was occupied by that family till William, 3rd Viscount Kilsyth, fled to Flanders, after the failure of the Rebellion of 1715. It has since that period been occupied by poor families and is now a fine building though much blackened by time and neglect, It was only intended as a mansion house and not as a place of strength, The walls are not thicker than an ordinary dwelling house, In one of the rooms Prince Charles Edward Stuart spent a night, The front of the house looks to the East and the Steps still remain, The door is very strong, being studded with iron hobnails and over the door is a small square peice of Ornamental work but bearing neither inscription nor Armorial bearings, It is comprised in two Storeys besides Attics. The extent of the Old building is shown on trace by being crossed with red. |

This is situated near the Manse and was the burying place of the Livingstones in the 16th &17th Centuries, Previous to the year 1815 the Parish Church stood over it and when that was removed the vault was in the open Churchyard, uncovered, except with flagstones, In 1850 the proprietor caused to be erected a small building over it and caused an account of it to be carved on the front, There have been no interments in it since the family of Kilsyth became extinct, the present proprietor's burying place being at Duntreath. The following is the inscription:
"Beneath this stone are deposited the remains of Jean Cochrane, Viscountess of Dundee, Wife of The Honourable William Livingstone of Kilsyth, and of their infant son. Their deaths were caused by the falling in of a house, composed of turf, in Holland, Mr Livingstone was with difficulty extricated the Lady, her child, and the nurse were killed, This occurred in the Month of October MDCXCV [1695]. In MDCCXCV [1795] the vault over which the Church at that time stood having been accidentally opened, the bodies of Lady Dundee and her son, which had been embalmed in Holland, were found in a remarkable state of preservation, After being for some time exposed to view the vault

"Brief Notices of Kilsyth"
Rev [Reverend] J. Anderson
Patrick Yuill |
029.05 |
On the night of the 14th Augt [August] 1645 James Graham Marquis of Montrose marched his army by the Hill Road from Stirling and encamped for the night on the rising ground above Colzium. On the morning of the 15th the Covenanters under General Baillie came along the line of the present Turnpike road and proceeded to attack the Royalist army in the position they had chosen, The account of the Battle is as follows: "The officers of the Covenanters acted as independent Commanders, remaining at or quitting the stations to which they were directed as they judged most convenient, The consequence was inevitable. The enemy under the sole direction of Montrose, who soon perceived their confusion, and, before they had arrived on the ground, attacked them with impetuosity. The charge was successful, The horse were driven back on the foot, and the disorder became at once general and irremediable, No quarter was given, and the historian of Montrose's wars relates that 6000 were put to the sword." Brief Notices of Kilsyth.
"The most memorable event in the civil history of the parish is the Battle of Kilsyth fought in 1645 betwixt General Baillie and Montrose, and which proved so disastrous to the Covenanters, The site of the battle is not very visible to the eye, It is in the valley rough and stony below Riskend farm, the greater part covered with the reservoir" New Statistical Account.
Sir Archibald Edmonstone, who pointed out the site, states that the foot of Montrose's Army fought nearly naked, and the Cavalry with bared arms and without coats.
[List of Names as written on the Plan] - Site of Battle betwixt the Covenanters under General Baillie, and the Royalists under the Marquis of Montrose. (15 August. 1645.)
[Note beside 'Site of Battle'] -
"But by far the most interesting antiquities, or antiquarian reminiscences, are those connected with the Battle of Kilsyth, the most disastrous in which the Covenanters acted a part, and at once the most sanguinary and the most victorious, whence the gallant but utterly mistaken Montrose plucked wreaths of blood-soaked garments in lieu of green laurel.
This battle was fought on the 15th August, 1645. The scene of action was the district immediately around the hollow which now contains the artificial lake or reservoir of the Forth and Clyde Canal, a field so broken and irregular, that, did not tradition and history concur in identifying it, few persons could believe it to have been the arena of any Military operation." A low flat topped hill to the East of Kilsyth, containing about 180 Acres, given by Lord Kilsyth about two centuries ago to the Feuars of the village, to be enjoyed by them as a Common, but subject to a feu duty. The Feuars subsequently took advantage of an old Act of Parliment and divided the Common into seperate lots, varying in size according to the property each possessed, Those lots are for the most part fenced and such as are not are well defined by narrow stripes of grass which have been shewn on trace in dotted lines. The name Barr Wood is distinctly applied to the whole of the hill and not to the wood which is on it, There is no evidence to show that it was ever covered with wood. There is a feature on it known as the "Court Hill" which see. |

Several irregular Knowes of small size, but, except one, joined to each other, While digging the gravel pit on the top, and on other occasions, great numbers of balls have been found, which are supposed to have rested there after being fired at the Battle between the Duke of Montrose's Army and the Covenanters. This name has been nearly lost sight of and is known only to the elder portion of the people in the parish. |
