028.12 This house on the authority of Sir A. Edmonstone Bart [Baronet] was built by William Livingstone, 1st Viscount Kilsyth, about the time of the Restoration of Charles 2nd (1660) and was occupied by that family till William, 3rd Viscount Kilsyth, fled to Flanders, after the failure of the Rebellion of 1715. It has since that period been occupied by poor families and is now a fine building though much blackened by time and neglect, It was only intended as a mansion house and not as a place of strength, The walls are not thicker than an ordinary dwelling house, In one of the rooms Prince Charles Edward Stuart spent a night, The front of the house looks to the East and the Steps still remain, The door is very strong, being studded with iron hobnails and over the door is a small square peice of Ornamental work but bearing neither inscription nor Armorial bearings, It is comprised in two Storeys besides Attics. The extent of the Old building is shown on trace by being crossed with red.
