It had been handed down to him through his father that it was the residence of the Livingstones during the Feudal age, The Baron dispensed justice in "Old Place" and the criminals when sentenced were marched to the "Gallow Hill" where a gallows was erected to execute them. No mention is made of it in any Accounts of the parish, though the "Gallow Hill" is spoken of in the Old Statistical Account as the place where the "Barons' unrelenting sentences were Carried into execution". The houses beside it are well known by the name of Old Place, and the spot behind it, where the Orchard was, is still pointed out. Sir Archibald Edmonstone considers this tradition correct, and wishes the name to appear on the plan.
