028.08 "On the East side of the romantic glen (Garrel) there is the Covenanters Cave, bearing the date 1669 inscribed on the stone or arch over it", New Statistical Account.
This Cave now is not altogether complete, the quarrymen while quarrying the rock destroyed a great portion of it, It was never wholly covered over the top, but the rocks slightly overhang it. The rock at that part will reach about 20 feet in height and the cave is capable of holding 50 people, The high sunk wall in front and the seat are of recent construction, Immediately above the seat is the date 1669 in a very legible character, It is generally denominated by the common people "The Chapel" as the Covenanters are supposed to have used it as a place of worship as well as of concealment.
