028.08 The site of this castle is in a commanding situation on an elevation overlooking the village, and commands a view of the surrounding country for many miles. The only part which remains is a small piece of the foundation, about 6 feet long and 1½ in height, the part shown at the South of the Castle, There are two huge masses of masonry firmly cemented together lying on the site of the Castle which have lain since it was destroyed . The date of the building of the Castle cannot be ascertained and very little is known of it till the middle of the 17th Century when it was occupied by Sir William Livingstone, afterwards Lord Kilsyth, who offered to hold it out against the Protector, but it does not appear that any resistance was made when Cromwell on his passage to Stirling completely destroyed it and left it in much the same state as it appears at the present day. When the Castle was destroyed the "Mansion House" in the village of Kilsyth was built.
"The Castle of Kilsyth is said to have been held by the English in the time of Wallace. From an early period it must have been surrounded by its dependent village."
