The parish of Killearn is in the county of Stirling Presbytery of Dumbarton, Synod of Glasgow and Ayr. The name Killearn seems to be compounded of three Celtic words Kill-ear-rhin, signifying the cell or church of west point. This etymology is descriptive of the situation, which is at the western extremity of the Campsie Fells, a mountainous ridge running eastward from Killearn to Kilsyth, a distance of twenty miles The parish is bounded on the west and north west by the parish of Drymen; on the north by the parish of Balfron; on the east by the parish of Fintry; and on the south and south west, by the parishes of Strathblane and Campsie in Stirlingshire and the parishes of New Kilpatrick, Old Kilpatrick, and Dumbarton in Dumbartonshire
The village, with the church, and Buchananan's Monument, is situated on rising ground commanding an extensive prospect. The church and manse are both substantial and commodious. The former is well attended; the number of communicants is about 480. The last augmentation of stipend was in 1814 when the teinds were exhausted. The stipend consists of 184 bolls of meal, 4 bolls of barley, and 3£ in money. The glebe consists of 8 acres of land worth 12£ annually. The value of the living, at an average of 4 years is 150£. There is one parochial school in the village, with a salary to the master of 31£ annually, and an allowance of 8£ in lieu of a house and garden. There are 2 private schools in different parts of the parish, maintained exclusively by school fees. There are no detached portions of the parish, nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

A precipitous rock situated at the west of Auchineden Hill. "A slope from Strathblane, rising westward 1000 feet in two miles, is terminated by a precipice of at least 150 feet from north to south. Here the face of the rock as if unsupported on the western side, has separated from the mountain, forming a crevice 60 feet deep, near 200 long, and in width, from 14 to 15 feet at the north end and 2½ at the south. The slice is of unequal thickness, in some places about 20 feet, in others about 3 or 4. In one or two points it has totally fallen away, leaving narrow openings, through which, as from embrazures of a castle, the spectator can look down on the immense fragments of rock with which the ground below is covered. The impression made by this striking object is that of a rock split by an immense wedge. The angular surface of the opposite sides, leaves no room to doubt of their having once adhered and fitted each other." Extract from Nimmo's History of Stirlingshire. |

The Blane has its Source on the Earls Seat, and forms the boundary for a considerable distance between Killearn and Strathblane and afterwards between Drymen and Strathblane. For the first three or four miles its course is rapid and bed rocky till at length it precipitates itself over several high falls into the Strath below; its course is then slugggish until it falls into the Endrick, which it does after a course of about twelve miles, at a point about six miles above that rivers influx to Loch-Lomond. |

This Stream rises in the Campsie Fells in Killearn Parish, and forms the boundary between Killearn and Fintry Phs. [Parishes] to its junction with the Endrick. It is a small stream with a rapid course and rocky bed; with no banks of any importance except for a short distance in Glenine where they are high and rugged. After a course of about three miles it empties itself into the Endrick Water. |

A range of hills extending through the Phs. [Parishes] of Campsie, Fintry, Killearn, & Strathblane. The face of the hills is broken with crags and glens; the north face more especially is very steep and precipitous; and on the summit and back part, is a deep moorground interspersed with moss, and forming a good pasture for sheep. The hills have the appearance of volcanic origin; and in many parts rude basaltic pillars are seen. In many places the hills appear statified; but the strata dip much and are sometimes nearly perpendicular. The stratified tracts contain coal, limestone freestone, ironstone &c. The highest point of the Campsie Fells is "Earl's Seat" which is about 1500 feet above the level of the Sea. |

The Endrick takes its rise in the Gargunnock Hills, in the Ph. [Parish] of Gargunnock, but only takes its name from the junction of the Gowan, and Burnfoot Burns, which both rise in Gargunnock Ph. [Parish]. It forms the Bdy. [Boundary] between Fintry and St Ninians for a short distance and afterwards passing through the Ph. [Parish] of Fintry supplies a Cotton Mill and a Spinning Mill near Newtown. After passing through Fintry it forms the boundary between Balfron and Killearn for a considerable distance and flows into Loch Lomond. The Endrick is a bold and rapid stream, with a rocky bed and rugged banks until it reaches the Loup of Fintry, a large Waterfall in the Ph. [Parish] of Fintry. Its course is then smoother and through a shingly bed, but its banks are again high and rugged through nearly the whole of its course in Killearn & Balfron. There are two considerable Waterfalls on it one in Fintry and the other in Killearn |

in the locality are fierce in asserting that Tamnetherskins was a favorite spot where the Goblins or Faries held their meetings in days of yore - property of J Findlay Esq Moss Killearn |

A waterfall on a small stream about one half mile south of the village of Killearn.
It is partly natural and partly artificial: the rock having been cut so that the top projects about eighteen inches over.
It is about seven feet in height.
The name is derived from the circumstance of its having been used as a bath by the ladies of the old house of Killearn, which stood adjacent, and of which a portion of the ruins still remains. |
