This name applies to a recently constructed aqueduct for the conveyance of the water of Loch Katrine to Glasgow, with the view of insuring a regular and unstinted supply to that City, the works consists of numerous tunnels cut through the Rocky elevations, and smaller aqueducts of masonry thrown across the various Roads, Rivers, Railways and Streams over which it passes. where the soil is soft and the excavations shallow, a series of cast iron piping three feet in diameter has been used. The distance from Loch Katrine to Glasgow over which this work extends is from 32 to 33 miles, its construction extended over several years, at a vast expense, and was sufficiently far completed as to be opened by Her Majesty at Loch Katrine on the 14th. Octr. [October] 1859.
