024.05 | An extensive coppice wood in the northern portion of the parish of Dunipace, and supposed to be the remains of the ancient Caledonian Forest, it, some few years since, contained a tree 12 feet in diameter "in the hollow of which Wallace and his patriotic companions, it is said, used to meet to concoct plans for wresting their country from grasp of the ambitious Edward. and a short distance from this tree Mr. Donald Cargill, in the month of Septr. [September] 1680, in the presence of a numerous assembly, pronounced sentence of excommunication against some of the most violent persecutors of that day, among whom were Charles II, his brother James, Duke of York, Duke of Monmouth, and several other persons of note."
