008.13 An ancient Square Enclosure at the western extremity of Flanders Moss on the Ward Burn, on the north side the outer and inner ramparts are quite discernable, on the east the inner only, on the west the inner and a small part of the outer at the north west corner - on the south the inner rampart is quite visible although it is now nearly levelled or removed, the part remaining having the appearance of an old stone wall - on the north it is covered with brushwood, also partly on the other three sides. The Fosse round the whole is quite visible, although very faint on the east, south, & part of the west side, the bottom of the Fosse or ditch is only about 12 or 18 inches lower than the surface of the surrounding ground & sloped very gently inward from the track of the outer rampart, on the north side the Fosse is more distinct, there are two openings on the west side and one on the east side, being made by the occupier of the ground for carts to pass through.
On the farm of Garfarran and within the Barony of Drummond are the remains of a Roman Fort - called the Peel of Garfarran (Castle of Vexation)

Parish of Drymen -- County of Stirling

This is the remains of an old Peel
or Building isolated by a
surrounding ditch - James McQueen
resident on the spot, pointed out to
me the position of foundation walls
within the square, and portions of the
ditch have been found by removing
the rock which underlies the surface
only a few feet - he also drew
attention to similar objects now
nearly obliterated on either side
"Peel of Claggans" and "Peel of Garchell"
which see -
Similar objects were met with in
Crawford Parish, Lanarkshire, all
found in sequestered spots - They are evidently not Roman Camps
