"A Parish containing the Post-Office villages of Lennoxtown, Haugh-head, Milton, and Torrance, and also the villages of Birdston and Clachan of Campsie on the southern boundary of Stirlingshire. It is bounded on the south by Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire, and on the other sides by the parishes of Baldernock, Strathblane, Fintry & Kilsyth. Its length southward is about 7miles, and its breadth is about 6 miles. The watershed of the Campsie Fells forms most of the northern Boundary; and the River Kelvin, here a small sluggish stream; traces most of the southern boundary. Part of the Campsie Fells rising to an altitude of about 1.500 feet above sea level, & cut into sections by deep romantic ravines and glens, constitute the northern district; the South Brae, an eastern prolongation of the Kilpatrick Hills, with an altitude of about 700 feet above sea level, constitutes the western part of the southern district; and the Strath of Campsie, not more than half a mile broad in the extreme west, but gradually expanding till it becomes lost in the great strath of the Forth & Clyde Canal toward the south east and the east, constitutes all the remaining district. Three principal burns and upwards of a dozen smaller ones come down from the fells and form

Glazert water; and this runs across the low country to the Kelvin, at a point nearly opposite Kirkintilloch." Fullarton's Gazetteer
There are three Parochial Schools in the Parish - one at Milton, one at Torrance, and the chief, or Parish School proper, in the Clachan of Campsie. The Ph. [Parish] Church is in Lennoxtown, besides which there is an U.P. Ch. [United Presbyterian Church] a R. [Roman] Catholic Chapel, to which there is also a School, and a body of Methodists worship in a room rented for the purpose. There are two Subscription Schools in Lennoxtown, and there is an endowed School - the Oswald School. There is an extensive Print Works in Lennoxtown and two on a smaller scale at Milton. The T.P. [Turn Pike] Road to Fintry & Kippen from Kilsyth passes through Lennoxtown, and there is a line of Road from this village to Strathblane, as well as other branch Roads to Glasgow. The principal antiquities are two Caledonian Forts. The Campsie Fells cross the northern part of the Parish. The Earls Seat is the highest in Campsie. A range of steep Fells stand above the village of Lennoxtown on the north side. The principal mansions are Lennox Castle Kincaid Ho. [House] Antermony Ho. [House], Ballencleroch or Kirkton Ho. [House] and Craigbarnet House. |

(Hills in Campsie Parish &c.)
" A range of hills in Stirlingshire, extending from the vicinity of the town of Stirling to the vale of the Blane. But after being briefly interrupted by that vale, it is prolonged through Dumbartonshire to the Clyde at Dumbuck by the Kilpatrick Hills. It may therefore be understood as including these; and thus understood, it forms the south screen of all the part of Strathmore between the Forth & the Clyde; and at the same time from its other face overlooks most of the great Strath of the Forth & Clyde Canal, and commands on that side very extensive and magnificent views of the Lowlands. Its general direction is from east-north-east to west-south-west. Its extreme length may be about 25 miles; its average breadth 8 miles. The face of the hills is broken with Craigs and Glens; and on the summit and back part, is a deep moorground interspersed with moss. The hills have the appearance of volcanic or igneous origin; and in many parts rude basaltic pillars are seen, particularly on the road from Campsie near the village of Fintry. In many places the hills appear stratified; but the strata dip much and are sometimes nearly perpendicular to the horizon. The secondary or stratified tracts abound with coal, limestone, freestone, ironstone, indurated clay and marl. In one place a dozen or more strata of ironstone with alternate layers of agrillaceous schist, may easily be counted. In several places there are appearances of Copper and lead. The highest ridge of the Campsie Fells occurs between the sources of the Carron and the Endrick where they are elevated 1,200 feet from its base, the elevation of which is about 300 feet above the level of the sea, making the height in all 1,500 feet." Fullarton's Gazeteer
The hills in Campsie Ph. [Parish] which belong to the range, described in the above account, extend from east to west in the northern

part of the parish and comprise a number of hill features most of which form according to the course of the principal streams. The "Earl's Seat" in the north western extremity of the parish (21.9) and the chain of Hills adjoining Strathblane which form the western Boundary of Campsie south of it (Earls Seat) fall to the Fin Glen, and the heights east of Fin Glen standing over the Clachan of Campsie fall to the Kirk Burn, which breaks the range. "Lecket Hill" is the principal hill, east of the "Craw Road" and the "Kirk Burn, which connects the range on this side with the "Meikle Bin" in Fintry Parish, in direction of Stirling by the range described in the Account on the other side. The only proper Fells in the parish are those which stand on the north side of Lennoxtown and which extend as Fells to the adjoining parish of Kilsyth - eastwards. Cort-ma-Law is the highest part of this range which is said to be 1500 feet above the level of the sea. The steep side of this range has many craggy precipices. Two Plans describe these Fells as the Campsie Fells, and they are commonly called so, but the more intelligent generally apply the name to the whole of the Hills in the Parish. A yellow shade shews the brow of the Hills west of "Kirk Burn", but Lecket Hill, which connects the range eastwards towards Stirling including the "Meikle Bin" could not be arranged this way as the Fells over Lennoxtown are not well connected with, but appear more as a distinct range of itself. Nor is "Lecket Hill" connected , like the hills westwards, with the Meikle Bin - both being separate hills having a considerable ravine between them formed by the descent of the two towards each other. (See the application of "Campsie Fells" on County Maps.) The New Statl. [Statistical] Account in alluding to the Caledonian Forts describes them as being at the foot of the Campsie Fells", which means the only Fells in the Parish, north of the village of Lennoxtown. |

A river which rises in the Parish of Fintry and flows eastwards to the River Forth, taking its name from the celebrated Iron Work of Carron which it flows past in the Parish of Falkirk. It is generally understood to bear the name "Carron Water" from the point where it forms the Boundary of this Parish, but before it reaches the point described, while in Fintry Parish it bears the name "Clachie Burn" or "Clauchie Burn". "Waterhead Burn" flows into it at the point where the name changes from Clauchie or Clachie to Carron. |

A small projecting brow on the northern ascent of "Lecket Hill", having a large whinstone called the "Gray Stone" near the top or brow. There is scarcely anything level between the "Gray Stone" and the extent of the flat of this object shewn by a yellow shade on the Trace. It is merely a prominent portion of the "Lecket Hill", near its bottom or foot, on ascending it from the north side. The name is taken from the Drove Road which passed it forming a very curious curve between the two "Drove Gates" at the Boundary Burns of the Parish on the east and west sides, No track of this Road is to be seen between the "Drove Gates", which have been written upon the authorities quoted, and which are good and well kept objects so generally known in connexion with this ancient Road for Cattle from the north of Scotland to England, that the Gates ought to be shewn as they are the only visible remains of the "Drove Road" in Campsie Parish. |

They rise with the heights between "Aldessan Burn" & "Almeel Burn", and the yellow Shade, shewn on Examination Trace, is their form on the south side as they stand above the "Fasseys", where they become a little steep in falling towards the flat ground. This Burn has two sources or takes its name from a point where two Burns join it - at "Alnwick Bridge". It flows through the famous "Campsie or "Kirkton Glen" and has several waterfalls or Linns bearing names. In passing through the Glen ("Campsie or Kirkton") it is, like that Glen, commonly called the Clachan or Kirkton Burn, but the old and proper name which appears on several Estate Maps is "Kirk Burn". The "Campsie or Kirkton Glen" extends up this Burn as far as Alnwick Bridge that is a Glen is formed on both sides by the hills on either side falling to the Burn; but the extent to which the name "Campsie or Kirkton Glen", which is much visited, belongs, as generally understood, is between the "Clachan of Campsie" and the head of the wooded side of the Glen at "Darling Linn." |

The "Craw Road" is the whole of the Trust Road in this parish from "Balgrochan" (Trace 6. 27-8), to the Parish Boundary at "Moss Maigry" (22.13). It bears the name chiefly from the circuitous form it takes in winding round the western extremity of that range of Hills which are over Lennoxtown, and which are the only actual Fells in the Parish of Campsie among the range of Hills called the "Campsie Fells". These Fells extend from here (the "Craw Road in the west) to the eastern By. [Boundary] of the Parish adjoining "Kilsyth Hills". |

A Stream which comes off the "Holeface" (21 Trace 6) and flows by the east side of the "Craw Road" to Alnwick Bridge" where, being joined by Alnwick Burn, it changes its name to Kirk Burn, which finally enters the Glazert passing through the "Kirkton or Campsie Glen", at the Lodge Gate of "Lennox Castle" (Trace 2. 28.12) The "Nineteen-times Burn", the name of which is well known in Campsie, takes its name from having in former times crossed the "Craw Road" nineteen times between Moss Maigry and Alnwick Bridge. Improvements in the Road brought the Burn along its side, but the name has not been forgotten, nor is it likely to be. |

"The Campsie Glens are celebrated for their beauty and attract great numbers of visitors during the summer months. That which is most frequented, & which alone strangers commonly visit is the Kirkton Glen, so called from its proximity to the situation of the Old Kirk."
New Statistical Account
The extent of this Glen goes a good distance, above (up the "Jacobs Ladder", which may be said to be the extent to which visitors consider the name to apply, & as there are no walks farther up or beyond the woody enclosed banks, the name has been retained within this space from its being the part of the "Campsie or Kirkton Glen" best known. The old and proper name of this is "Kirkton Glen", now commonly called by the people about the neighborhood the "Clachan Glen", and "Campsie Glen" in the country generally. People from a distance would not know where "Kirkton Glen" is, but "Campsie Glen" would be recognised anywhere in Scotland. The best authorities have been applied to for this name & it has been found that both Kirkton & Campsie should be retained. The Finglen farther west is a very fine Glen, but it is hardly known beyond the neighborhood, the "Kirkton Glen" being generally resorted to by strangers. |

"Alwyn Earl of Lennox in the reign of William the Lion, granted to St. Kentigern & the church of Glasgow the Church of Kamsie, with the land which he had given to it in its dedication. The Church was dedicated to St. Machanus whose festival was on the 28th September. It was situated at the mouth of a ravine called the Kirkton Glen, where five streams pouring down from the hills unite to form the water of Glazert. The Church of Campsy is enumerated among the prebendal churches of Glasgow in a bull of 1216, and it remained as a prebend till the Reformation." Origines Parochiales Scotiae.
The site of this Church is marked by the remaining gable of the old Parish Church, which bears date 1774, & which was a renewal of the building of this part of the old church of St. Machanus. The eastern part of the old ch. [church] along with the renewed portion of it - the gable end still standing was in use as the Parish Church till about 30 years ago when the present Parish Ch. [Church] in Lennoxtown was built. The two first personal authorities, natives of the Clachan, well remember the Ch. [Church] of St. Machanus. There is a belfry & bell in the gable end, which remains, but no part of this can be identified with the Remains of the ancient ch. [church] itself. The Burying Ground here is still used by the Parishioners, & is likely to be the same for some time to come. |

This upon the authorities quoted, is the old Well of "St. Machanus", which is now partly covered over by a flagstone. The name has been handed down to the authorities mentioned, & it is very probable that it is as old as the church which stood at the place shewn in the Burying ground of the old Parish church. The well contained an excellent spring, which was in some measure destroyed by conveying water from it to the Clachan. There is nothing very remarkable about "St. Machanus'" well except the name. The depth is not more than 4 feet The water is very clear. |

The old name of the old Mansion House is Ballencleroch which, upon the authority of the proprietor, was changed to Kirkton about 200 years ago, & is now commonly called both "Ballincleroch" & "Kirkton" in the country. The Proprietor has therefore, in order to retain both names, adopted "Kirkton House" to the modern part of the mansion, & "Ballencleroch" to the old part, which is occupied along with the other as one house. Ballencleroch or Ballincleroch in Gaelic signifies, as stated by the Pr. [Proprietor], Kirkton in English. |

"By far the noblest building in this Parish, or indeed in this part of the country, is Lennox Castle, the Seat of John Le Kincaid Lennox Esquire, who is proprietor of nearly half of the land in the Parish". New Statl. [Statistical] Account.
The Castle, which is a modern building of 20 years standing, is situated near the bottom of an elevated portion of the parish known as the "South Brae", but its position is nevertheless high and commanding from the Brae terminating abruptly and precipitately in a copse wood, which extends east & west of the Castle, on the north side, to a distance of nearly a mile on the one side - the west, & half a mile on the other. The building is composed of a number of Towers, the largest of which are upon the north-east and the south-east angles. Some of the interior Towers are much higher than the larger ones. None of them bear names. There is an arched gate-way on the west side entering a spacious courtyard, & the outer part of this side of the building is plain. The ruins of the old house of "Woodhead", which is the name the Estate still bears , stand at the top of the steep wooded bank which terminates the "South Brae". The ruins of a Dove Cot in the ornamental grounds, & a stone spiral cross near the Castle, on the south side, bear date 1713. There are extensive offices west of the Castle. Woodhead Estate & Lennox Castle are the property of Lady Strangford. |

A stone spiral stair at the southwest angle leads to the top of the ground floor which is now formed into a small garden having a seat in one of the old window-sills. The walls are 8 links thick and entwined with ivy. This Name applies to the whole of the rising ground which rises abruptly from the Pow Burn in the north (Plans 11 & 12), by a steep & wooded embankment, close to Lennox Castle, and afterwards gradually ascends to a great altitude southwards, the top of which is shewn by a yellow shade on the Examination Traces. Its descent on the east & west is gradual, and the southern descent is also tolerably gradual, extending this side as far as "Newlands" & "West Muirhead" (Plan 16) & sweeping round to the east as far as the "Glazert" about "W. [West] Muckcroft" (Trace 1. 28-13). The western extremity sweeps round gradually from "Newlands" to the

end of the steep bank in "Craigend Muir" (Plan 11), which forms the northern extent. Considerable attention has been given to the application of this name, and it is only by viewing it from different places both far and near that the proper position can be fixed. At first it appears as if the name properly belonged only to the steep brae in front of "Lennox Castle", by persons on the north of it, along the T.P. [Turn Pike] Road to Strathblane (Plan 7 & 8. 27) speaking of it as the "South Brae". But inquiry shews the name to belong to the whole of the rising ground south of the Castle, which by the people generally, is understood to belong to the object described. |

"There are few antiquities in this district which merit description, except two Caledonian Forts, and even these scarcely arrest the attention, unless so far as they prove that the Caledonians chose to occupy places of strength directly opposite the Roman Wall, no doubt with the intention of watching the motions of the legionaries. These mounds are perfectly circular with regular fosses. The one is styled the Meikle Reive in the language of the Country, and is about a hundred yards in diameter. The other is styled the maiden Castle, about 20 yards in diameter. They are both situated at the foot of the Campsie Fells". New Statl. [Statistical] Account.
This antiquity is commonly called by the country people the "Roman Fort" or Camp. Several remains of small entrenchments are upon the north side. No traces

of the outer side of a ditch appear on the other sides. About the centre of the east side there is a gap or brake in the Fort which appears to have formed the entrance to it. Opposite this, on the west side, there is a gap similar to the one described, but it does not take place directly opposite, being less than the half circle of the Fort. No personal authorities could be found to identify the local name "Meikle Reive" with this antiquity which appears in Accounts &c. of the Parish. The Name "Maiden Castle" has been identified with the other Caledonian Fort - which see (Trace 2 28-9) "Sloughneagh" and the Craigs west of it on the side of the Fells overhang this Fort. It is not a perfect circle - nor has it ever been - the remains being almost entire. |

This name applies to a huge whinstone rock standing above the ground about 5 or 6 feet and measuring about 15 or 20 feet square; but it is not regular. It stands on the side of part of the Campsie Fells that range between the "Craw Road" in the west (Trace 2. 27-8) and Brown Hill in the east (Traces 5 & 6. 28-6) which are the only real fells in this Parish. (See N. [Name] Sheet of Campsie Fells. Trace 14 Sheet 21) "Knockybuckle" is a name well known and applied to everything on the side of the Fells at the stone or near it. Between Knockybuckle & Brown Hill the Fells break in their steepness, and their northern extent on the flat or top mingles so as not to be defined with the high ground adjoining "Cort-ma Law" |

This is the highest hill in the north east of the Parish and is next in height to the "Earls Seat" in the north-western extremity of Campsie Parish. It belongs to that range of the Fells, which are the only proper Fells in the Parish, between the "Craw Road" in the west (Trace 2. 27.8) and the "Brown Hill" in the east (Trace 5. 28.6). The top of this Hill is the only part to be defined by itself, as is in its fall on the north & south sides it may be said to be part of the range on which it stands. It is now generally known as "Cort-ma Law" which may be a corruption of the form given on Estate Map. |

This room is during the week-days occupied by an adventure school, & on Sundays by a small congregation of Weslyan Methodists who have held it by the year for as many as twenty years for worshipping in. The house is always referred to as the "W. M. [Wesleyan Methodist] Chapel" although the room is but let from year to year by the Pr. [Proprietor]. There is not a minister placed in Lennoxtown for this chapel or place of worship, nor is there a minister to many of the Chapels belonging to this sect, in country places - such as at Kilsyth. The clergymen officiate in the country by turn. It may be mentioned here that the methodists had a place of worship similar to this in Kirkintilloch for 40 years before a Chapel of their own was erected. There is upon the authorities quoted, every likelyhood of this room being used for a place of Worship as long a time as it has been at present. The adventure school has been kept by different Teachers for about five years. |

This name upon the two first authorities quoted is the old & proper name of the whole Steading which on the Estate Map, the Valuation Roll, & the Factor's authority is called Glorat, but the Factor admits of the name Dovecot, the application of which he is uncertain, further than that it belongs to someplace about the Steading. It has therefore been retained not as a descriptive term or name, which it may originally have been, but as a proper name of doubtful application. |

the Glen. Many defaced remains of ditches are to be seen on the north & west sides, precisely as represented on Trace. The outer trench or ditch (which crosses the margin line of trace running southwards), seems to have been more for the purpose of carrying off water from the Fort, which from its position near the bottom of a range of steep hills may have been at times much liable to a great flow of water into it, than for the purposes of defence. Besides the Parish Church in Lennoxtown there is a United P. [Presbyterian] Church, a Roman Catholic Chapel (St. Paul's) and a room where a body of W. [Wesleyan] Methodists worship. There are five schools here - two Subscription, one a R.C. [Roman Catholic] School, (St. Paul's) and an adventure School in the W.M. [Wesleyan Methodist] Chapel, as well as an endowed School in "Crosshill St." called the "Oswald School". The source from which almost the whole of the inhabitants derive their support, is Lennoxmill Printworks. The Terminus of the Campsie Branch Railway is in Lennoxtown. The Streets are regularly lighted from a Gas Works in the village, and most of them bear names. The Inns are the "Commercial", the "Swan" & the "Lennox Arms". There is a Branch Bank of the Royal Bank in "Service St". The name applies from Rowantreefaulds in the south to Geelong & Union Places in the north. (trace 3. 27-12). "The last instance in this district of a Baron of Regality exercising the jurisdiction of pit & gallows over his dependants is said to have been exercised by the Viscount of Kilsyth, in the year 1793 (?) having condemned one of his own servants to be hanged for stealing silver plate from the house of Bancloich. The fellow was executed on a hill in the Barony of Bancloich, styled the Gallow Hill, a part of the gibbet was lately found lying in a swamp adjoining the field of Blood".
New Statistical Account.
The "Field of Blood" is pretty well known, & was 'till the Railway was made in the same field as the "Gallow Hill". It is not known exactly where the gibbet was found. There is a tradition in the locality that the "Field of Blood" takes its name from a party of persons coming to rescue the man who was hung, meeting the Viscount's people in this field, which narrowly escaped being a field of blood by an expected encounter. |

This work has been wrought for a very long time for coal - upwards of a century. Several old Pits & mines are filled up in the neighborhood of where the name is written. Lime has been worked for 25 years. The name applies now, as it is generally understood, between the Coal & Limestone Pit on this Trace, & the old Limekilns east (Trace 4. 28.10). This is an old well known name, & like Sculliongour & Glorat Works, should be retained (See the description of these works Trace 1 of this Plan & 4 of 27.8). The Derry Coal & Lime Works are on Glorat Estate, the property of Sir Samuel Stirling Bart. [Baronet] |

A well known name which applies from the junction of the "Spouthead" and "Burniebrae Burn", with the Burn which flows at the bottom, or through it, to the extent of wood & slopes shewn on Traces, and which extends to the margin line of this Trace. From the point of junction of the Burns ("Spouthead" & "Burniebrae") to the last margin line of Trace 4, the natural sloping to the Burn is too gradual for representation as a slope. The Burn is known farther down as the "Waltree Burn", but that name may be said to apply from "Cowies Glen" to its junction with the Glazert. In hilly districts like this a Glen name often applies to that part of a Burn where the Glen is, and sometimes as at "Samson's Glen", the same name applies to both Burn & Glen. |

"A rivulet of Stirlingshire. It is formed by the confluence of the Pow Burn, the Finglen Burn, and the Kirkton Burn near the lodge at the entrance to Lennox Castle in this Parish; and it flows hence in a south-south-easterly direction, but with a great curve, to a junction with the Kelvin, opposite the town of Kirkintilloch. It receives the waters of no fewer than 16 Burns, and has a very large aggregate of water power, insomuch as to have been a main cause, along with the plenteousness of coal, why manufactories have taken root and flourished in Campsie."

The last instance in this district of a Baron of Regality exercising the jurisdiction of pit & gallows over his dependants is said to have been exercised by the Viscount of Kilsyth in the year 1793 (?) having condemned one of his own servants to be hanged for stealing Silver plate from the house of Bancloich. The fellow was executed on a hill in the Barony of Bancloich, styled the Gallow Hill. A part of the gibbet was lately found lying in a Swamp, adjoining to this "field of blood". New Statl. The "Gallow Hill", which is a slight eminence in an arable filed, is well known. Formerly - before the Railway was made, this field

was as one field with the "Field of Blood", which, as it is understood now, applies from the north side of the Railway to the T.P. [Turn Pike] Road on Trace 5 - 28.9. The "Gallow Hill" field is now distinctly separated from the field of Blood by the Railway. It is not known at what place the old gibbet was found. A little village, the houses of which are much scattered, on the T.P. [Turn Pike] Road between Kilsyth and Lennoxtown. There is a Station here on the Campsie Branch Railway, a School, a Post Office, a good Mill for Corn & Flour, and a Smithy. The village and its neighborhood are much supported by the "Kincaid Print Works", which, however, have not been wrought for about 13 months. The Glazert divides two properties here - the one on the north side belonging to Glorat Estate, and the south to Kincaid. The name applies to all the houses immediately

on the west side of the "Brash Burn", in the west, to the farm of East Baldorran in the east. The southern extent is as far as those houses south of "Frenchmill" farm. Milton is the form in which this name is now generally written, and the contraction is so established by custom that the best authorities use it. "Craighead" is a name which forms the greater part of the village on the north side of the River, but Milton comprehends the whole of the houses on both sides of the River. |

Altho' we did commit no deed nor fact
That was against the bridegroom's contract
Yet we to Glasgow were as prisoners brought
And against us false witnesses they sought
There sentence cruel and unjust they past
And there our corps on Scaffold they downcast
There we our lives and right hands also lost
The pain was ours but theirs shall be the cost
From Glasgow we were brought to this place
In chains of iron hung up for certain space

This name applies to a square plantation standing on the top of a steep ridge which rises abruptly on the north & south sides from the low grounds. East & west the ridge extends a good distance but the top, beyond the extent shewn by a yellow Shade on the Examination Trace, becomes irregular & broken. This plantation about 20 years ago had a mound on it, as stated by the authorities quoted, about 5 feet in height or thereabouts. It was not regular. At present there are not the least remains of any artificial raising of the ground within the plantation, which was the cause of its being levelled. The same authorities know that Urns have been found in it, but they never saw them, and it is likely they were found more than 80 years ago. The same belief with respect

to this mound, or "Law" as it is well known, is common in the district as at the "Law" in Balgrochan - i.e. of being a place where the Romans (?) administered Law &c. The places on which both the "Laws" stand are about a mile from the Roman Wall & north of it. Whether these names refer merely to the Laws or Hills on which they stand, or to what they are supposed in the district - of places for justice &c. (probably Court Hills) cannot be ascertained. The only authority for the Urns being found in this mound has been handed down by their forefathers to the authorities quoted on the other side. (See New Statl. [Statistical] Account below)
"There have been several Urns found in the Parish containing ashes & burnt bones. A long thatched house which by the people of the neighborhood is said to take its name like the mound on Trace 3 South of the "Puddlehouse" from being a place where in ancient times justice or law was administered, & the common belief is that it was a Roman (?) mound, or that the Romans used it for the purposes stated; for at present, or indeed within the memory of the personal authorities quoted, some of whom are near 80 years old, there is not a mound remaining, but the position of the "Law" house is certainly elevated a good deal above the village of Torrance. It is a gradual rising hill but not remarkably so. This place is sometimes pronounced Layo, but most of the people know it to be properly "Law". Upon the personal authorities quoted there was an Urn containing calcined remains found at the spot marked in the year 1824. The description given of them answers that given in New Statl. [Statistical] Account below. There were no cairns on either of the "Laws".
"There have been several Urns found in the Parish containing ashes & burnt bones, the urns were about 5 inches in depth & fifteen in diameter, made of coarse clay apparently baked in the sun, a species of frieze work encircled the lower edge. They have been found in Cairns generally placed between two flags."
