027.12 This is the old Mansion House of Woodhead, which from its appearance & strength appears to have been a Tower house. The walls are nearly there original height - two floors above the ground, but, with the exception of the arched stone roofing of the ground floor, it is without a roof at the present time, & in a ruinous state. A stone spiral stair at the southwest angle leads to the top of the ground floor which is now formed into a small garden having a seat in one of the old window-sills. The walls are 8 links thick and entwined with ivy. There is nothing authentic as to the age of this house, known by the authorities quoted, but it is looked upon as an antiquity & presumed as such by the Proprietress Lady Strangford.
